FOLEY, Ala. – Marshall graduate student Kat Gonzalez lifted the No. 10 seeded Thundering Herd over No. 7 seed App State in game one of the 2022 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
Marshall (4-9-5) advances to face second-seeded South Alabama at 1:30 p.m. CT Wednesday. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
App State (6-8-5) scored first as Shannon Struder scored her third goal of the year with 37 seconds on the clock before the half to give her team the lead at the break.
The Thundering Herd outshot the Mountaineers 8-4 in the second half, as 14 minutes into the action Makai Laguines scored hir third goal of the year with an assist from Morgan White. Despite chances for both teams in the closing minutes, neither team broke through for the first overtime action both squads faced all year.
Nearly one minute into overtime, Gonzalez found herself free ten meters outside the 18 and placed a curling shot into the upper right corner to give Marshall its first lead of the match. The game-winner marked the lone shot of the overtime periods for the Thundering Herd.
