FOLEY, Ala. – No. 8 seeded Georgia State used an early goal from Callee Maughon to upset No. 1 seeded Georgia Southern to advance to its fifth consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The lone goal came in the 18
th minute on a cross into the box for the 1-0 score line in game five of the 2022 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
No. 8 seed Georgia State (9-6-5) broke through with an early goal and held up defensively to secure the upset. The Panthers advance to face the winner of No. 4 James Madison and No. 5 Texas State on Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
No. 1 seed Georgia Southern (8-4-5) outshot Georgia State 13-7 in the match. Despite trailing 1-0 at the break, the Eagles outshot the Panthers 10-2 in the first half. Ellie McIntyre placed a pair of shots on frame as the team finished with five in the match. Possession was tied at 50%, however 42% of the Eagles’ possession was spent in the attacking quarter.
Maughon provided the difference maker with her second goal of the season after a cross from Gracen Crosby bounced around the box and landed at her feet. The junior placed the ball securely into the back of the net to secure the goal.
