Turkoglu Sends Monarchs to First Sun Belt Tournament Championship

FOLEY, Ala. – Ece Turkoglu placed a perfect penalty into the back of the net to send No. 6 seed Old Dominion to its first Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship as they took down the three-time defending champion No. 2 seed South Alabama.
 
The Monarchs (8-8-3) advance to the championship match on, November 6 at 1 p.m. CST at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. They will face the winner of No. 4 seed JMU and No. 8 seed Georgia State. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
 
South Alabama (11-2-7) totaled 12 shots in the match with Jaidy Campos in goal picking up five saves. Gabriela Angula placed a pair of shots on frame for the Jaguars in the match as after 110 minutes played, the two teams remained level at zero. Entering the match, the Jaguars had won eight of the last nine Sun Belt Tournament Titles.
 
Heading to penalties, Old Dominion had outshot South Alabama 13-8 in the second half and overtime periods. The Jaguars stepped to the line first as they missed their first two penalties. Kennett connected with another Monarch missing to give ODU a 1-0 lead through the first two shots. South Alabama answered as Cross, Lowery and Calderoni Martinez each made to give the Jaguars a 3-2 advantage.
 
A successful penalty from Cami Johnstone sent the match to a sixth penalty kick. A Jaguar finish off the post set up Turkoglu with the chance to send the Monarchs celebrating to the finals. A perfect pen into the upper right corner found the back of the net as Old Dominion stormed the field.
