Top Four Seeds All Prevail in Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The top four seeds, including the three teams that shared the regular season title, all prevailed on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
 
It was nearly easy work for all four squads as top seed South Alabama, No. 2-seed Georgia State, and No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina all earned 4-0 wins. After losing the doubles point, No. 3-seed UT Arlington rallied for a 4-2 to complete the sweep for the league’s top teams.
 
The semifinals will get underway on Saturday as South Alabama faces Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. ET, followed by Georgia State squaring off against UT Arlington at 2 p.m. ET. Both matches will air live on ESPN+.

Match 4: (4) Coastal Carolina, 4 (5) ULM 0

No. 4-seed Coastal Carolina opened its 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 sweep of No. 5-seed ULM on Friday morning at the Peachtree City (Ga.) Tennis Center.
 
Coastal Carolina (13-8) took the doubles point from ULM (7-12) as All-Sun Belt First Team duo Victorie De Samucewicz and Jesse Hollins scored a 6-1 win, and the duo of Anna Babayan and Megan Hopton earn a 6-4 victory.
 
De Samucewicz, who was also an All-Sun Belt Second Team singles player, gave the Chanticleers a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Hala Badwy in the No. 1 singles position.
 
Just minutes later, Hollins scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over Madalina Grigoriu to give Coastal a 3-0 advantage. At nearly the same time, Megan Hopton earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jimena Paula to secure the win for Coastal.
 
Coastal Carolina will face co-regular season champion and No. 1-seed South Alabama on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. ET, in the first of two semifinal matches at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. 

Match 5: (1) South Alabama, 4 (9) Texas State 0

Top seed and co-regular season champion South Alabama cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 9-seed Texas State in the Jaguars first match of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Peachtree City (Ga.) Tennis Center on Friday morning.
 
South Alabama (20-4) will now face No. 4-seed Coastal Carolina in the championship semifinals on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. ET. Texas State’s season comes to an end at 6-16.
 
After a little bit of a slow start, the Jaguars earned the doubles point as All-Sun Belt First Team duo Yu Fujioka and Lara van der Merwe scored a 6-4 win, followed by a 6-4 win from All-Sun Belt Second Team duo Nikola Kohoutova and Luminita Tutunaru.
 
Kohoutova, the Sun Belt Player of the Year, gave the Jaguars a 2-0 lead on the Bobcats following a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win over Kate Malazonia.
Van der Merwe quickly gave South Alabama a 3-0 lead following a 6-2, 6-4 win over Maria Lora. The Jaguars closed out the match when Luminita Tutunaru topped Mae McCutcheon 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Jaguars will be looking to advance to the conference championship match for a second-straight year after falling to Georgia Southern in the title match last season.

Match 6: (3) UT Arlington 4, (6) Troy 2

After losing the doubles point, co-regular season champion and No. 3-seed UT Arlington fought back to earn a hard-fought 4-2 win over No. 6-seed Troy on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Peachtree City (Ga.) Tennis Center.
 
UT Arlington improved to 22-2 on the season with the win while Troy saw its season come to an end with a 10-13 mark. The Mavericks will face No. 2-seed Georgia State in the second championship semifinal match on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
 
Despite Liz Chileno and Ana Paula Jimenez winning the first doubles match for the Mavericks 6-3, Troy immediately bounced back as Kristina Kukaras and Chiara Desia Dabamo earned a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. Anastasiia Khokhlova and Andrea Widing secured the doubles point for the Trojans with a 7-5 win at the No. 1 spot.
 
Ana Paula Jimenez quickly tied the match for UTA with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over Franziska Ahrend. Minutes later, Carla Pons gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead following her 6-0, 6-4 win over Michelle Ncube.
 
Hagar Amin tied the match 2-2 for Troy with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 win over All-Sun Belt Second Team member Tara Gorinseck.
 
All-Sun Belt Second Team member Sarina Reinertsen gave UTA a 3-2 lead following a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olivia Elliott. Momoka Horiguchi clinched the match for the Mavericks with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Anastasiia Khokhlova.
 
UT Arlington will be making its third-straight appearance in the conference championship semifinals.
 
Match 7: (2) Georgia State 4, (10) Louisiana 0

Led by Sun Belt Player to Watch Angel Carney’s convincing win, co-regular season champion and No. 2-seed Georgia State earned a 4-0 sweep over No. 10-seed Louisiana on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Peachtree City (Ga.) Tennis Center.
 
Georgia State (17-5) advances to the championship semifinals on Saturday where the Panthers will face No. 2-seed UT Arlington. Louisiana’s season comes to a close at 6-12.
 
The Panthers convincingly took the doubles point as the All-Sun Belt Second Team duo of Angel Carney and Sofya Golubovskaya earned a 6-0 win. Just minutes later, the No. 3 doubles team of Eva Chivu and Pragnya Kumar scored a 6-1 win to put Georgia State ahead 1-0.
 
Carney, who earned All-Sun Belt Second Team singles honors as well, continued her dominant play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Yoshimura Momoko to give the Panthers a quick 2-0 lead.
 
Ellie Aldrich followed just minutes later with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anna Katherine Harvey giving Georgia State a 3-0 advantage. All-Sun Belt First Team member Eva Chivu wrapped up the match for the Panthers with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Catarina Zheng to complete the sweep.
 
Georgia State will return to the semifinals of the championship for the first time since 2019.
