MADISON, Miss. — A pair of clutch putts on No. 18 lifted Louisiana to its fourth all-time Sun Belt men’s golf championship—and its first since 2007—with a 3-2-0 win over Georgia Southern in Thursday afternoon’s championship match at Annandale Golf Club.
Georgia Southern fifth-year Ben Carr earned the first match win for the Eagles, defeating Louisiana redshirt sophomore Matt Weber, 6&5. Georgia Southern freshman Parker Claxton followed in short order with a 3&2 win over sophomore Eli Ortego to give the Eagles an early 2-0-0 advantage.
Louisiana junior Jake Marler—who battled through a pair of playoff holes in Thursday morning’s semifinal match to punch Louisiana’s ticket to the championship final—got the Ragin’ Cajuns on the board in the finale with a 3&2 win over fifth-year Mason Williams.
Louisiana freshman Malan Potgieter then sank a putt on No. 18 to clinch a 1-Up win over fifth-year Wilson Andress and ensure that the championship match would come down to the final hole of the final grouping remaining on the course.
The second pairing was all-square heading to the par-5, 18th hole at Annandale Golf Club. There, senior Charlie Flynn dropped a putt into the cup to put the pressure on Georgia Southern sophomore Brantley Baker.
Baker’s attempt to halve the hole stayed up—and queued the Ragin’ Cajuns celebration.
In Thursday morning’s semifinal matches, top-seeded Georgia Southern took down No. 4 seed Troy, 5-0-0, behind victories by fifth-years Wilson Andress (3&2), Ben Carr (5&4) and Mason Williams (5&3). No. 3-seeded Louisiana advanced by besting No. 2 seed South Alabama, 3-2-0, with wins from senior Charlie Flynn (4&2), sophomore Eli Ortego (2&1) and junior Jake Marler (1-Up in 20 Holes).
