Marshall Women and South Alabama Men Lead After Opening Day of Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Marshall women and South Alabama men lead the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C., following the opening day of the event.

The South Alabama men have totaled 27 points through three events. Arkansas State is in second place with 21 points, while ULM is in third with 20. The Thundering Herd women have charted 28 points through four events. South Alabama is in second with 26 points, while Louisiana is in third with 25. 

The second day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 11 a.m. ET Friday. Running events and the ESPN+ broadcast commence at 5 p.m. ET. 

Arkansas State’s Aimar Palma Simo won his second consecutive men’s hammer throw title as the junior repeated with a mark of 68.37m/224-3. Texas State’s Grady Leonard took silver with a mark of 64.25m/210-9.

Texas State’s Elisabet Runarsdottir set a personal-best in the women’s hammer throw and claimed the outdoor title with a mark of 65.53m/215-0. Bodine Degli-Umberti from South Alabama secured silver after just missing the podium a year ago on the final throw of the event with a mark of 59.86m/196-5. 

In the women’s javelin, Louisiana’s Maria Bienvenu set a season-best and Sun Belt Championship meet record distance of 52.87m/125-5 on her first throw of the event. James Madison’s Shelby Staib took silver with a mark of 47.10m/154-6. 

Marshall pole vaulter Macie Majoy claimed gold as there was a three-way tie at the height of 3.96m/12-11.75. Majoy earned the title after only having one unsuccessful jump prior to the max height. South Alabama’s Alexis Gratia claimed second with the mark being a personal-best.
 
On his final throw of the event, ULM’s Callan Saldutto launched the javelin a personal-best 73.67m/241-8 to earn the top spot on the podium. Troy’s Cole Stewart also recorded a personal-best in his silver medal performance with a distance of 67.44m/221-3.

Through four events of the women’s heptathlon, Arkansas State’s Camryn Newton-Smith totaled 3,549 points to lead the pack. Southern Miss’ Safiya John finished the day in second with 3,462 points as ULM’s Claudine Raud-Gumiel ended the first day with 3,206 points.

Arkansas State’s Colby Eddowes leads the men’s decathlon with 4,020 points after claiming first in the 400m, long jump and 100m. Indoor champion Sebastian Reyneke from South Alabama finished the opening day with 3,881 points in second as Patryk Baran from Arkansas State rounded out the top three with 3,781 points through the first five events. 

In the nightcap, both the men and women recorded facility records in the 10,000m. South Alabama’s Lauren Tinkler claimed the women’s title with a personal-best 34:36.61. Arkansas State’s Jaybe Shufelburger claimed silver in 34:51.91. 

On the men’s side, Kirami Yego repeated as the outdoor champion in 29:18.97. Jacob Pyeatt from Arkansas State claimed silver in 29:53.26.
