Arkansas State Men and Women Take Over Lead After Second Day of Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arkansas State men and women used multiple record performances to lead the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C., following the second day of the event.

The Arkansas State men have totaled 73.5 points through eight events. South Alabama is in second place with 50.5 points, while Texas State is in third with 43.
 
The Arkansas State women catapulted from fifth to first with 62 total points after the second day. South Alabama is second with 48 as Texas State sits right behind them in third with 47 after eight events. 

The final day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 12 p.m. ET Saturday. Running events and the ESPN+ broadcast commence at 4 p.m. ET. 

Arkansas State’s Camryn Newton-Smith tallied an impressive performance in the final three events of the heptathlon to set new facility, championship meet and Sun Belt season records with a total score of 5,818 points. Safiya John from Southern Miss claimed silver in the event with 5,432 points. Newton-Smith’s performance places her currently at number five in the country, while John’s total places her 26th.

Arkansas State’s Colby Eddowes followed his fellow Red Wolve by setting a new SBC championship meet record as well as a facility record in the men’s decathlon with a total of 7,349 points. Heading into the final event in the 1500m, Eddowes held a 20 point lead. Sebastian Reyneke finished second in the final event, however Eddowes crossed the line just behind him as Reyneke earned the silver. 

Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi captured the women’s long jump title with a mark of 6.07m (19’ 11”) to repeat as the outdoor champion in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. Imani Moore picked up a personal-best 5.99m (19’ 8”) to earn the silver in the event.
 
In the men’s long jump, Chris Preddie from Texas State earned gold with a distance of 7.36m (24’ 1.75”). Deondre Hardy scored eight team points for Coastal Carolina with his silver medal mark of 7.26m (23’ 10”).

Colette Uys from South Alabama stood atop the podium in the women’s shot put with a personal-best mark of 16.86m (55’ 3.75”). Selase Sampram from Arkansas State tallied silver with 16.16m (53’ 0.25”). Texas State picked up 15 team points as Melanie Duron, Carly Watts and Ebony Wolridge finished third, fourth and fifth.
 
In the men’s shot put, Javon Osbourne recorded a personal-best 18.40m (60’ 4.5”) to give Troy its first champion of the outdoor event. Grady Leonard from Texas State earned second with a mark of 17.97m (58’ 11.5”).
 
Bradley Jelmert captured applause from the stadium in the men’s pole vault as the junior recorded not only a personal-best height of 5.56m (18’ 3”), but he set new facility and SBC championship meet records as well. Nick Russell from Louisiana claimed the silver medal with a height of 5.06m (16’ 17.25”).
 
Pauline Meyer brought the Red Wolve crowd to its feet in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, as the senior set a new facility and SBC championship meet record with a 10:11.04 time. Elizabeth Martin earned the silver with a personal-best time of 10:32.22.
 
App State junior Calbert Guest put in a personal-best showing in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:54.06. Ronnie Saunders also tallied a personal-best time of 9:02.70 to secure the silver medal.
