MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arkansas State men and women swept the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for just the second time in program history.
The Arkansas State men claimed their sixth title with a total of 168.5 team points. This also marked the first time in program history that the Red Wolves completed the triple crown with Sun Belt titles in men’s cross country, men’s indoor track & field and men’s outdoor track & field. Texas State finished second with 144 team points as Louisiana finished third with 134.
The Arkansas State women captured their fourth consecutive Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championship title and league-best nineth overall with 144 team points. Texas State finished second with 107 team points as South Alabama finished third with 97.
The final day of competition featured 26 events, in which Sun Belt athletes set nine facility records and four championship meet records. On the men’s side, Texas State tallied 101 team points on Saturday, as Arkansas State led the field with 106.5 team points in the final competitions.
Over the three day event, 15 facility records, nine meet records and one Sun Belt season record were broken. 187 student-athletes recorded personal-best marks at the championships as 66 tallied season-best performances.
In the men’s discus, South Alabama junior Francois Prinsloo recorded a new meet and facility record with a mark of 61.20m (200’ 9”). Earning silver was Jacob Tracy from Arkansas State who tallied a personal-best distance of 55.79m (183’).
The Texas State women’s 4x100-Meter Relay team won gold and set a new season-best time of 44.46 that broke a facility record that was set in 2014. Coastal Carolina finished second in 44.61, a time that also would have beaten the previous facility record of 44.65 that was set by South Carolina.
The Texas State men’s 4x100-Meter Relay team followed suite with a facility record time of 39.74. The previous record of 39.91 was set by Charleston Southern in 2012. The Bobcats narrowly edged out the Ragin Cajuns from Louisiana, who finished in 39.77 for silver.
Dominick Yancy earned gold in the men’s 400-Meter Dash with a time of 45.79. He set a new facility record that was broken by teammate Taahir Kelly, who took second in 45.84, that occurred in the prelims on Friday.
In the women’s 100-Meter Dash, Sedrickia Wynn broke a 12 year record set by South Carolina’s Shayla Mahan (3x NCAA Outdoor All-American, World U20 Champion) with a personal-best time of 11.28. Alexis Glasco from Coastal Carolina earned silver with a personal-best mark of 11.29.
In the women’s 800-Meter Run, Kimone Campbell from ULM finished in 2:07.21. Her time set a new meet record that was set in 2015, as well as a facility record from Purdue in 2016. Smilla Kolbe from Southern Miss finished just behind her in 2:07.83 for silver.
Both the men’s and women’s 5000-Meter Runs featured record performances. On the women’s side, senior Pauline Meyer shattered both the meet and facility records with a time of 16:16.24. The meet record of 16:44.55 held since 2014 as the facility record of 16:39.89 from Purdue was set in 2013. The top four finishers of the meet were faster than the previous meet record. The gold for Meyer was her third individual title of the championships.
On the men’s side, Kirami Yego took down both the facility and meet record as well in 13:59.07. The previous meet record of 14:00.64 was set in 2012 as the facility record of 14:24.66 was also set in 2012. Yego’s title marked four consecutive outdoor distance gold medals as for the second straight year the junior won both the 3,000-Meter and 5,000-Meter Runs.
In the final event of the championships, the Bobcats captured a facility record in the 4x400-Meter Relay in 3:07.08. They took down a record that had remained since 2013, as Louisiana earned silver with a personal-best time of 3:08.32.
The 2023 NCAA outdoor track and field preliminaries will run from May 24-27. The East preliminary will be hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., while the West preliminary will be hosted by California State University. The selection will be announced by 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 18.
The top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the preliminary competitions for each individual event. The top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the preliminary competitions for each relay event.
Combined events do not attend the preliminary meets. For combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list will be accepted directly into the championships.
The NCAA outdoor track and field championships run from June 7-10. Both the men's and women's championships are held simultaneously at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
