CARY, N.C. – 13-seeded Marshall defeated top-seeded Ohio State 1-0 in the NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup Semifinals, advancing to the national championship.
Marshall will face Vermont in the title match. The Catamounts defeated Denver in penalty kicks, 4-3.
The Herd will appear in their second national championship match in four years. The team won the national championship during the 2020 season.
Marshall would get out to an early lead, with a goal just seven minutes into the first half. Goalkeeper Aleska Janjic would send a kick down field to a streaking Tarik Pannholzer. The Buckeye goalie would come to the edge of the box and collide with his own teammate, leaving Pannholzer with a wide-open net.
Ohio State outshot the Herd 10-6 in the first half yet would hold their lead through the first 45 minutes of play. Janjic would make four saves to keep the Buckeyes scorless heading into the half.
The Herd played stout defense in the second half, not allowing a goal despite being outshot 10-2. As he has done all year, Janjic would make an incredible sliding save 15 minutes in; disallowing Ohio State’s best shot at a goal all game.
With the clock approaching zero Ohio State would continue to fire towards the goal unsuccessfully and the Herd take the victory in the semifinals.
With five saves on the night, Janjic would record his eighth shutout of the year, tied for most in the Sun Belt and ninth most nationally.
