NEW ORLEANS – Arkansas State senior guard Taryn Todd has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after an impressive scoring outburst while leading the Red Wolves to a pair of non-conference wins.
Todd becomes the first A-State player to garner the league’s top weekly honor since Caleb Fields accomplished the feat on Feb. 6, 2024.
Todd had a career week for Arkansas State, averaging a league-best 27 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 20-for-42 (.476) from the field, including 6-for-14 (.429) from 3-point range. His 54 total points were the fifth most nationally last week and his 20 field goals made ranked third.
A Vaughan, Ontario, Canada native, Todd scored 23 points to complement a career-high eight rebounds and four assists with no turnovers in an 83-79 home win over UT Arlington on Dec. 12. He was instrumental in the Red Wolves’ improbable 98-89 comeback victory in overtime at American Athletic Conference preseason favorite UAB on Dec. 15, scoring 22 of a career-high 31 points after halftime. He made 12 shots in the contest including four 3-pointers to match his career high while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists in the win.
The Red Wolves’ win at UAB was tied for the sixth-largest comeback win in NCAA Division-I history. Trailing by as many as 27 points in the second half, Arkansas State became just the sixth team ever to overcome a deficit of 25 or more at halftime while tying for the third largest halftime comeback in D-I history.
