James Madison and Marshall Lead After Day One of Sun Belt Women’s Swim and Dive Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 2024 Sun Belt Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships kicked off with a new championship record from James Madison inside the Rosen Aquatics & Fitness Center on Wednesday.

The Dukes’ 200 Medley Relay team of Cameron Gring, Riley Bridgman, Madison Cottrell and Jamie Cornwell set a new benchmark for the event in 1:38.53 to finish atop the podium in the event. The time also marked a new school record.
 
Marshall finished second in the event with a time of 1:39.66 as Old Dominion (1:41.52) and Georgia Southern (1:44.50) rounded out the scoring. All four relay teams swam faster than their seeded time.
 
The Herd stormed back in the 800 Freestyle Relay capturing first in 7:17.61. Marshall managed to outpace their seed time by nearly ten seconds as the Dukes finished second in the event to even the scoring on opening day of the championships. Georgia Southern swam a new school record in the event to finish third as Old Dominion rounded out the field for a tie in third place in the team scores.
 
The format for the remainder of the championship will feature morning prelims, followed by diving prelims and consolations. All the evening sessions will feature the finals for the morning swimming and diving events with a relay event to close out the day.
 
Day two will feature the 500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle. The 3-meter Diving prelims and consolations will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday will conclude with the 3-meter Diving final and the 200 Freestyle Relay final.
