MADISON, Miss. – Arkansas State paces the 14-team field at the 2024 Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship after carding 2-of-3 under-par rounds on Monday.
The Red Wolves posted a score of even-par 288 to top the team leaderboard after Round 1 at the par-72, 7,190-yard Annandale Golf Club.
Troy sits in second place—nine strokes back of Arkansas State—after a 9-over par 297 opening-round effort. ULM will join the Red Wolves and Trojans in Tuesday’s top pairing after shooting 11-over par 299 to sit in a third-place tie with Marshall.
Arkansas State sophomore Thomas Schmidt recorded five birdies over a six-hole stretch to card a 4-under par 68 to pace the 70-player field, one stroke ahead of his teammate freshman Jake Lile (-3, 69). Reigning Sun Belt individual champion South Alabama sophomore Hugo Thyr was the third golfer to shoot under par at 2-under par 70 on the day.
Three individuals shot even-par 72—Louisiana junior Eli Ortego, Louisiana sophomore Malan Potgieter and Troy junior Jake Springer—to sit in a tie for fourth place, four strokes back of championship-leading Schmidt.
On the team leaderboard, three teams are tied for fifth at 13-over par 301 through 18 holes—Georgia Southern, Southern Miss and Louisiana. James Madison (+14, 302), Texas State (+15, 303), Coastal Carolina (+15, 303), South Alabama (+15, 303), Georgia State (+17, 305), Old Dominion (+17, 305) and App State (+23, 311) round out the conference championship field.
The second round of stroke play begins at 8:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday and will be
broadcast live on ESPN+ and
live scored via Golfstat.
