Schmidt's Playoff Redemption Lifts Arkansas State to Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship

MADISON, Miss. — After Arkansas State sophomore Thomas Schmidt fell on the third playoff hole in Wednesday’s bid for a Sun Belt individual championship, he had a message for the Red Wolves.

“I lost that trophy, but we’re going to win this trophy tomorrow,” said Schmidt.

The storyline evolved just how Schmidt said it would, with Thursday’s championship match coming down to the final pairing—Schmidt against ULM senior Melan Dhaubhadel.

Dhaubhadel was 1-Up Through 16, but Schmidt knocked his approach shot on the par-4 17th to within three feet to pull the match all square with a birdie. The pairing then headed to the par-5 18th, where Schmidt had dropped the third and final playoff hole to South Alabama sophomore Hugo Thyr on Wednesday evening after attempting to reach the green in two and hitting a shot into the water.

Schmidt again found the water on No. 18 Thursday—this time off the tee—but was able to scramble for par to halve the hole.

“Here we go, another playoff,” said Schmidt to Red Wolves head coach Mike Hagen as he walked off No. 18. Hagen responded, “Can we at least win one of them, please?”

Win he did. After halving No. 1, Schmidt stuck his tee shot on the par-3 2nd on the green, while Dhaubhadel found the greenside bunker. Schmidt two-putted for par and ignited the Red Wolves celebration after Dhaubhadel failed to get up and down.

The title is Arkansas State’s second all-time (2019), with both coming over the past five Sun Belt championship events.

Arkansas State junior Jack Maxey earned the first championship match win for the Red Wolves, defeating ULM senior Mikkel Schmitt, 3&2, in the first pairing. ULM freshman Ylan Guerin Pozzalo pulled the match back even at 1-1-0 by taking down Arkansas State senior Devyn Pappas, 3&2, in the second pairing.

The green on No. 16 continued to be a popular spot to close out a match, as ULM freshman Louis Anceaux also put the finishing touches on his 3&2 third-pairing win over Red Wolves sophomore Chris Somerfield there to give ULM a 2-1-0 advantage. Senior Hugo Ronnberg, the lone Red Wolf to drop his match during Thursday morning’s semifinals, earned his redemption with a 3&2 victory of his own over ULM junior Theis Poulsen to knot the match at 2-2-0.

From there it was up to Schmidt—the Sun Belt individual runner-up—who claimed playoff redemption to write the story he foretold.

In Thursday morning’s semifinal matches, top-seeded Arkansas State took down No. 4 seed Texas State, 3-1-0 with one match unfinished, behind victories by senior Devyn Pappas (5&3), sophomore Thomas Schmidt (4&2) and sophomore Chris Somerfield (5&4). No. 2-seeded ULM advanced by besting No. 3 seed Marshall, with wins from senior Mikkel Schmitt (7&6), freshman Ylan Guerin Pozzalo (5&4) and junior Theis Poulsen (3&2).
