NEW ORLEANS – Marshall graduate guard Jalen Speer has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Thundering Herd to a 2-0 week with a pair of road wins in league play.
Speer is the second Marshall player to earn the league’s top weekly honor this season and first since Nate Martin garnered the recognition on Nov. 19.
A Gainesville, Fla., native, Speer averaged 20.5 points, four assists and two rebounds per game while shooting 14-for-22 (.636) from the floor and 7-for-12 (.583) beyond the 3-point arc in the Herd’s two victories.
Speer shot 8-for-12 from the field, 5-for-8 from deep and made four free throws to finish with 25 points and a season-high seven assists in a 92-79 win over Georgia State on Jan. 23. Just two days later, he shot 6-for-10 overall and scored 14 of his team-leading 16 points in the second half of a 71-67 triumph at Georgia Southern.
Through nine conference games, Speer leads the Sun Belt in 3-point field goal percentage (.533) and 3-pointers made (32) and ranks second in field goal percentage (.541).
