Marshall & UCF to Meet in Sun Belt Men's Soccer Tournament Championship

NEW ORLEANS - No. 3 Marshall and No. 5 UCF win their semifinal matchups to move on to the Sun Belt men's soccer tournament championship.

Marshall will host as the highest remaining seed in the matchup.

The matchup between No. 1 Kentucky and No. 5 UCF got off to a slow start offensively with neither team having a shot on goal in the first half.

UCF had the first shot of the game which didn’t come until the 8th minute off the foot of Claudel N’goubou. The Knights went on to outshoot the Wildcats 6-2 in the first half, but despite both teams efforts they would head into the locker room scoreless.

The Knights would shift the momentum in the opening minutes of the second half with a goal in the 50th minute. UCF’s Drew Hansen would get a pass from Joey Mueller just outside the box and get it past Sebastian Conlon in the bottom left corner in what would be the only goal of the game.

Kentucky would have to look for answers to UCF’s aggressive attack, being outshot 13-5 heading into the 77th minute of play. Unable to convert, the Wildcats would get opportunities with the ball infront of the goal, but would fail to find the back of the net.

UCF went on to hold the Wildcats scoreless and advance to the Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory.

(2) West Virginia 2, vs. (3) Marshall 3 | Box Score

The semifinal in Morgantown, Va. started slow but rapidly became a back-and-forth affair. Through the first 45 minutes, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Second seeded West Virginia led 7-5 in shots during the first half and corner kicks 4-1.
 
Two minutes after the second half whistle, Marshall found the opener as Carl Romberg scored his fourth goal of the year. Five minutes later, West Virginia’s Isaac Scheer scored his second goal of the year from Constantinos Christou to level the scoring. 
 
Four minutes later, Joao Roberto put the Thundering Herd ahead 2-1 in the 56th minute with an assist from Joao Alves. Eleven minutes later, Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year Marcus Caldeira leveled the scoreline at 2-2 with a volley from just inside the box. 
 
Both teams had chances in the final moments of regulation, but the score remained tied at 2-2 as the match headed into extra time. During the first ten-minute overtime period, Marshall had a pair of corner kicks, however neither team registered a shot throughout the time.
 
With 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime, a ball headed on by Roberto from Marshall was awarded a penalty kick. Joao Alves scored his first goal of the season in the lower right corner on the penalty to send the Herd back to their third consecutive Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship Match. 

Marshall and UCF met in the final match of the regular season with the Herd winning 2-0 at home. 

UCF is seeking their first ever Sun Belt men's soccer tournament title, while Marshall looks to secure their second.
