NEW ORLEANS – The seventh week of Sun Belt volleyball action will feature 12 divisional matches as the teams conclude the divisional portion of the season. The league’s top two West division leaders will match up and the regular season title could be claimed as 12 matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- EARNING THE CROWN – Two weeks remain in the regular season as three teams are within striking distance of the regular season trophy. James Madison, who has won 11 consecutive matches, leads the East Division with a 9-1 record and a league-leading 11-1 mark. They will travel to Old Dominion for a pair of matches. Georgia Southern stands at 9-3 overall and 7-3 within the division. The Eagles will face in state foe Georgia State on the road for a series this weekend. In the West, Arkansas State is currently 9-3 overall and will travel to South Alabama for a series to decide the division.
- DIVISIONAL DECISION – Both the East and West Division top seeds are still up for grabs heading into the final weekend of divisional play. 10 teams will make the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that will be hosted in Foley, Ala. Coastal Carolina, James Madison Georgia Southern lead the East Division, as Georgia State, Marshall and App State battle for the remaining two seeds. Georgia State hosts Georgia Southern as the Panthers ride a three game win streak into the in-state matchup. Marshall will play host to App State with the Herd holding a 6-4 record over the last ten matches. In the West, South Alabama and Arkansas State are tied at 8-2 as the Jaguars host the Red Wolves. Texas State is secure at 7-5 as Southern Miss, Troy and Louisiana round out the division. Southern Miss will travel to Troy as Louisiana welcomes ULM for a weekend series.
- WINNING WAYS – Seven of the teams in the league enter the weekend on active win streaks, as James Madison leads the way with 11 consecutive victories. Texas State has won four in a row as Georgia State and Arkansas State have each won three consecutive matches. Both Marshall and Georgia Southern won both matches last weekend as Troy finished the series last weekend in the win column. The Red Wolves are 8-2 in their last ten matches as the Eagles are 7-3. Coastal Carolina, Marshall, South Alabama and Texas State are all 6-4 in the last ten matches played.
- RPI RANKINGS – Six Sun Belt programs rank inside the top 100 of the sixth RPI rankings that were released earlier in the week, as the league ranks seventh overall in conference RPI. James Madison continues to lead the way as the Dukes climbed up to No. 29 in the most recent rankings. Arkansas State moved to No. 71 with Coastal Carolina coming in at No. 81. Georgia Southern is at No. 87 after a pair of wins with App State at No. 92. Texas State rounds out the top 100 at No. 96. Three additional programs are inside the top 150 with South Alabama (113), Marshall (127) and Georgia State (144).
