Arkansas State and Troy Advance to Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Quarterfinals

ROME, Ga. – Arkansas State and Troy battled through the first round on Thursday in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Rome Tennis Center. Each team secured a spot in the event’s quarterfinal round to be contested on Friday. 

(9) Arkansas State used momentum from the doubles point to pull the minor upset on (8) Georgia State 4-1 in the opening match of the tournament. (7) Troy was able to outlast (10) Coastal Carolina 4-2 in nearly a four hour match.

The top six seeds will be in action on Friday. (4) South Alabama faces (5) James Madison at 10 a.m. ET as top seeded Old Dominion faces (9) Arkansas State at the same time. The afternoon will feature (3) Texas State against (6) Marshall and (2) App State versus (7) Troy at 2 p.m. ET. The matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+. 

Match 1: (9) Arkansas State 4, (8) Georgia State 1

Arkansas State (13-10) earned the doubles point on courts one and three. Anna Grigoreva and Caria Muro Castellvi won on court one 6-3. Sarah Millard and Hanmare Mcaslin secured the early lead with a 6-4 win on court three.
 
Muro Castellvi gave the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead with a win via retirement on singles court three. Mcaslin followed shortly after on singles court five with a 7-5, 6-0 win to put Arkansas State on match point, ahead 3-0.
 
Georgia State (6-13) responded on court four as Luciana Galvez won 6-1, 6-2 to bring the scoreline to 3-1. Lily Cvanciger from Arkansas State lifted the Red Wolves to victory with a 7-6, 6-4 win on court two.
 
The win marked the first for Arkansas State since 2015 and the first advancement to the quarterfinals since the win in 2015. They will face top seeded and No. 46 nationally ranked Old Dominion at 10 a.m. ET.

Match 2: (7) Troy 4, (10) Coastal Carolina 2

Seventh-seeded Troy (12-9) went ahead 1-0 early with the doubles point. Coastal Carolina (10-11) won the first doubles match on court three as Aida Mitrache and Bruelle Kouam won 6-3. Troy responded on court one as Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva secured the 6-4 win. Gabrielle Leslie and Emilia Namyslo secured the point on court two 7-5.
 
Second Team All-Conference member Anna Babayan tied the match at 1-1 on court one with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Troy retook the lead on court two as Second Team All-Conference member Maria Guirguis also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Coastal Carolina answered on court three as Kouam came back to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to again tie the match at two.
 
Leena Metwally put the Trojans ahead 3-2 with a three-set win on court four, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Down to singles court five, Hagar Amin pulled out the tiebreak win in set one 7-5 and won the second set 6-2 to send the Trojans to the Quarterfinals.
 
Troy will face No. 2 overall seed App State in the afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.
