South Alabama Men and Women Lead After Opening Day of 2025 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The South Alabama men and women lead the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at Sentara Park on the campus of James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., following the end to the opening day of the event.

The South Alabama men have totaled 37 points through three scored events. Arkansas State currently sits in second with 21 points as App State finished the opening day in third with 19 points. The South Alabama women have charted 37 points through four events. Texas State is in second with 35 points, while Louisiana is in third with 27. 

The second day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 10:30 a.m. ET Friday. The ESPN+ broadcast will commence at 5 p.m. ET. 

In the first event of the day, Texas State’s Lara Roberts claimed gold in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 68.84m/225-10. With the top finish, Roberts marks the fourth Consecutive Bobcat to win the hammer throw at the championship. South Alabama’s Iyana Johnson launched a personal-best 59.88m/196-5 to finish second on the podium. Louisiana’s Lily Murray earned the bronze with a mark of 57.23m/187-9.

The men’s hammer throw saw Arkansas State’s Noa Isaia win the gold with a mark of 65.66m/215-5. South Alabama took both second and third in the event with a pair of personal-best performances. Samuel Mika finished second with a throw of 61.29m/201-1 as teammate Bobby Gray finished third with a mark of 60.25m/197-8.
 
Texas State’s Charlize Goody seized the top podium spot in the women’s javelin with a personal-best mark of 51.09m/167-7. South Alabama took both silver and bronze with a pair of personal-best throws. Calli Stokes finished second with a mark of 48.17m/158-0 as her teammate Ava Wheaton finished third with a distance of 46.66m/153-1. 

The women’s pole vault completed next, as Carly Pujol from Arkansas State cleared a personal-best height of 4.31m/14-1.75. Lilly Nichols from App State earned the silver with a personal-best clearance of 4.11m/13-5.75. James Madison’s Erica Moolman earned the bronze with a personal-best height of 4.01m/13-1.75.
 
In the final scored event of the day, South Alabama’s Reuben Booysen claimed the gold with a throw of 68.46m/224-7. Texas State’s Connor Warzecha earned the silver with a mark of 63.58m/208-7. Louisiana’s William Howard took home the bronze in the event with a mark of 58.08m/190-7.

Through four events of the women’s heptathlon, Arkansas State’s Miranda Burgett leads the field with 3,231 points. ULM’s Savanna Lawson currently sits in second with 3,142 points as Troy’s Kady Schwietz finished the day in third with 3,050 points.

Texas State’s Easton Hammond holds a narrow lead the men’s decathlon with 3,734 points. Louisiana’s Federico Bovo sits in second with 3,714 points with a trio of first place finishes. Louisiana’s Nelvin Appiah (3,688 points) and Coastal Carolina’s Josh Roberts (3,669 points) round out the top four.
