AUBURN, Ala. – For five-straight innings, Coastal Carolina had the leadoff man aboard and a runner reach scoring position, before breaking through for a three-run bottom of the seventh en route to a 4-1 win over Auburn in Game 2 of the Auburn Super Regional at Plainsman Park to punch its return ticket to Omaha.
After making the seventh Super Regional appearance by a Sun Belt program since the format was adopted in 1999, Coastal Carolina became the second Sun Belt team to advance to the College World Series, joining the 2000 Louisiana ballclub. The Chanticleers will be making their second all-time trip to Omaha, with the other coming during their 2016 national championship campaign.
Coastal Carolina will return to Omaha riding a national-best 23-game winning streak. The streak will be the longest entering the College World Series since the current format was adopted in 1999. Oregon State held the previous longest winning streak entering the College World Series at 21 games in 2017.
After going down 1-2 in the count, Auburn junior third baseman Eric Snow fouled off three-straight pitches and worked a nine-pitch walk in the top of the second. A softly-struck, two-out RBI single down the right field line by freshman catcher Chase Fralick put the Tigers on the scoreboard first for the second-consecutive game, 1-0.
Coastal Carolina got leadoff singles in the bottom of the third and fourth, but could not plate a run, leaving a pair on in both frames.
With two on and two out in the top of the fifth, Coastal Carolina starter redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Jacob Morrison froze Auburn senior first baseman Cooper McMurray for a strikeout looking to end the Tigers scoring threat.
The Chanticleers responded with a third-straight leadoff single in the bottom half of the frame—this one off the bat of senior outfielder Wells Sykes—to chase Auburn starter freshman righty Andreas Alvarez.
Coastal Carolina loaded the bases on two pitches from Tigers reliever junior lefty Cade Fisher. Junior catcher Caden Bodine sent the first pitch he saw through the right side and senior outfielder Sebastian Alexander beat out the throw for an infield single on a bunt back to Fisher. Fisher proceeded to strike out Chanticleers junior second baseman Blake Barthol and induce an infield fly to conclude a 10-pitch battle with sophomore third baseman Walker Mitchell. After Coastal Carolina sophomore first baseman Colby Thorndyke worked ahead 2-0 in the count with two outs and the bases loaded, Fisher prompted three-straight swings to strand three Chanticleers.
With two aboard and two out in the top of the sixth, Morrison struck out Auburn senior shortstop Deric Fabian on three pitches to strand a pair of Tigers for the second-straight frame.
Sophomore outfielder Blagen Pado made it four-straight innings with the leadoff man aboard for the Chanticleers, getting hit by the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth. Following a one-out walk by junior designated hitter Ty Barrango, Coastal Carolina moved the tying run into scoring position for the fourth-straight frame. Fisher struck out Sykes and induced a pop up to first from Bodine to again strand multiple Chanticleers.
The Coastal Carolina leadoff man reached for the fifth-straight inning, as Alexander rocketed a double down the left field line to open the bottom of the seventh. Alexander advanced to third on a Barthol sacrifice bunt, before the Chanticleers finally broke through with a one-out single into left center by Mitchell, plating their first run of the afternoon to knot the game at 1-1. Three batters later, senior shortstop Ty Dooley beat out the throw to first on a two-out tapper off the end of the bat to allow Mitchell to score the go-ahead run for the Chanticleers, 2-1. With two outs and the bases loaded, Auburn turned to its third pitcher of the frame—senior righty Parker Carlson—and Sykes promptly took his first pitch off the arm to extend the Coastal Carolina advantage to 3-1.
Chanticleers sophomore left-handed pitcher Hayden Johnson—who entered in relief of Morrison in the seventh—struck out five Tigers over his first two frames to work around a two-out walk in the seventh and one-out single in the eighth.
Alexander led off the bottom of the eighth the same way he did the seventh—with a double—this time ricocheting off the left field wall. Mitchell drove in Alexander with a one-out single to left to provide the final 4-1 margin for Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina has not lost a game this postseason, sweeping its way through the Sun Belt Baseball Championship, the Conway Regional and the Auburn Super Regional en route to the College World Series. The Sun Belt regular-season and tournament champion Chanticleers boast a 53-11 record on the season, leading the nation with 53 wins and an .828 winning percentage.
