NEW ORLEANS – James Madison fifth-year guard Cliff Davis has been named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Dukes to a pair of conference road wins while eclipsing 20 points in both contests.
Davis averaged 24.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 18-for-29 (.621) from the field and 6-for-14 (.429) from 3-point range while netting 7-of-8 (.875) free throws in pivotal wins at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 18 and Georgia State on Feb. 21.
A native of Thomasville, Ga., Davis capped his explosive week with a season-high 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, while adding five made free throws, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in an 80-65 win over the Panthers on Saturday in Atlanta. The performance marked his sixth 20-point game of the season with each of those efforts coming against Sun Belt opponents.
Davis got his week started with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-9 from 3-point land, to go with six rebounds in a 67-65 win over the Chanticleers in Conway, S.C., on Wednesday evening.
Leading all Sun Belt players with 90 treys made this season, Davis is James Madson’s second Player of the Week honoree this season after junior forward Justin McBride was recognized on Dec. 2.
