NEW ORLEANS – Georgia State’s Sophia Johnson and App State’s MeMe Davis and Raegan Richardson each turned in impressive performances to lead in various statistics across the league. They have been named Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Players of the Week.
Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Sophia Johnson, Georgia State
(1st Yr., OH/RS, San Diego, Calif.)
Georgia State’s first year outside hitter Sophia Johnson totaled 47 kills, two aces, 28 digs and five total blocks across the three-match weekend, hitting .328 for the stretch while racking up 51.5 total points. The San Diego, Calif., native set three new career highs, matching a career-high 17 kills in back-to-back matches against Middle Tennessee and Murray State before closing with a season-best four total blocks against Northern Colorado. Johnson delivered a double-double against Middle Tennessee, pacing the Panthers with 17 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 win and followed the performance up with a 17-kill performance against Murray State, tying for the second-most kills in a three-set match across the Sun Belt this season. Johnson totaled double-digit kills in all three matches this weekend.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
MeMe Davis, App State
(3rd Yr., L, Gainesville, Fla.)
App State third year libero MeMe Davis helped lead the Mountaineers to three victories this past week while setting a new season-high for herself in digs with 30. The Gainesville, Fla., native tallied 83 digs in 16 total sets for a 5.19 average per set, which placed her third in the league for average and first in the number of total digs. Davis added three service aces in the three matches with 25 digs against Elon and 30 against North Florida.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Raegan Richardson, App State
(3rd Yr., S, Jensen Beach, Fla.)
App State third year setter Raegan Richardson had an over-the-top week, playing in four matches and a total of 16 sets. Richardson set three new season-highs in points (13.5), aces (4) and total blocks (3), while also tallying a new career-high in kills (10). She assisted the Mountaineers to three victories, tallying 153 assists over the course of the week. The Jensen Beach, Fla., native picked up 32 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs in the win over Elon with three block assists and a pair of service aces. She then tallied 50 assists in the match with North Florida and 46 assists with five digs and four kills against Western Carolina.
