2014 MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET (PDF)
Statesboro, Ga. – The No. 1 seed Harwick Hawks claimed the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory against the No. 3 seed and host Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks earned the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament with the victory.
The Hawks (6-9-4, 3-1-1) won the first Sun Belt Conference men’s soccer tournament title since the 1995 season.
Hartwick struck in the 65th minute off a corner kick for the game’s lone goal. Hartwick sophomore Jamie O’Grady sprinted in on a corner kick sent in from the right side and chipped in a right-footed shot from inside the six-yard box. O’Grady’s first goal of the season was assisted by junior midfielder David Styles.
The Eagles (8-9-0, 3-2-0) pressured in the latter stages of the second half, pushing for the equalizer. Hartwick redshirt junior goalkeeper Tom Buckner made three saves in the match and two key ones down the stretch to earn the victory. For Georgia Southern, junior goalkeeper Jack Falle made four saves in taking the loss.
Hartwick sophomore defender Kit Tregear earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award as selected by the league’s head coaches. His teammates Jhevaughn Beckford, David Styles and Chris Walter were selected to the All-Tournament team. Also selected to the All-Tournament team were Eric Dinka, Jack Falle and Emmanuel Raji of Georgia Southern.
The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Championship is the first one awarded by the conference since the 1995 season. The 2014 season was the conference’s first sponsoring men’s soccer since the league sponsored the sport from 1985-1995.
The NCAA Men’s Soccer Selection Show will be shown on NCAA.com at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 17. Hartwick earns the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by being the conference tournament champions.
