Sunday, November 29

Career Day by Tieuel Lifts Warhawks to 88-84 Victory over Southeastern
HAMMOND, La. – Sophomore guard Chelsea Tieuel dropped a career-high 21 points, including two free throws after a steal in the final seconds, to lift the ULM women’s basketball squad to an 88-84 victory over Southeastern Sunday afternoon inside University Center.

ULM (4-1) sprinted out to a 9-2 lead before Tieuel added a layup with 4:29 remaining in the first to give the Warhawks a 13-7 advantage. Southeastern (0-7) countered with eight straight points over the next 1:14 to take the lead at 15-13.

Tieuel quickly answered with a three pointer and senior Alayshia Hunter made two free throws before the Lady Lions ended the last 2:08 of the opening frame on a 6-1 run to lead 21-19.

Tieuel continued her scoring barrage in the second stanza by scoring the first two field goals for the Warhawks, both on treys. Southeastern grabbed a 33-30 lead on the Warhawks before Tieuel again knocked down a triple.

The Lady Lions would score on a jumper before the Warhawks raced to a 9-0 run on six free throws and an Andreanna Jackson triple to take over the lead at 42-35.

Tieuel finished the first half with 15 points on 5-6 shooting including a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc. Jackson also padded the stat sheet accumulating eight points, seven rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Lions opened the third on a 9-4 run before the Warhawks countered with five straight including another Jackson trey to maintain a five-point lead at 52-47. ULM increased the advantage to six at 59-53 before Southeastern ended the final 4:24 of the third on a 16-7 run capped off by back-to-back triples from Taylin Underwood.

Hunter knocked down a jumper to bring the Warhawks back within three at 69-66 and that would be the score heading into the fourth.

Sophomore Daja Chase notched seven of the first 12 points for ULM in the fourth as the game came to a 78-point standstill with 3:47 left to play. After a Southeastern bucket, Tieuel drained another triple and Hunter added two free throws to give ULM an 83-80 lead with 2:47 left.

Tieuel made one of two at the charity stripe with 16 seconds to play to make it 86-84 before recording a steal which forced the Lady Lions to foul. Tieuel hit both free throws with five seconds to play to seal the game for the Warhawks.

Hunter dropped 22 points and grabbed eight boards and Chase (14 points, seven rebounds) and Jackson (16 points, eight rebounds) each neared double-doubles.

The Warhawks were 52 percent (12-23) from behind the arc and made at least 10 threes for the first time since a Dec. 30 tilt against Georgia State last season.

ULM returns to action on its home court against in-state rival UL Lafayette on Dec. 3 with a slated 5:15 p.m. tip.

Charlotte Knocks off Georgia State, 83-71
ATLANTA – Charlotte used a 15-0 run in the second half to pull away from Georgia State en route to its 83-71 win on Sunday in the GSU Thanksgiving Classic. Mercer topped Howard 70-53 in the first game of the afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

GSU and Charlotte were tied 10 times and the lead changed hands seven times in the first half. The host Panthers had their largest lead of 30-25 with 4:12 in the second quarter. The final tie was at 34 with 1:34 before Charlotte’s Kira Gordon drained a 3-point basket to give the 49ers a 37-34 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, GSU scored to close within 46-45 with 5:20 when the deciding run came. The visiting 49ers went on a prolonged 15-0 scoring streak to make it 61-45 before GSU finally scored after nearly five minutes with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

GSU closed back to nine points at 62-53 with 8:23 and drew back to 74-65 with 1:10 to play, but never drew closer.

Host GSU (2-4) had four players in double figures, topped by Ashlee Cole with 15 points (all in the first half). Madison Newby finished with 14 points, while Makeba Ponder added 12 more and Alaysia Mitchell contributed 10 points.

Visiting Charlotte (4-2) had all five starters in double figures, paced by Lefty Webster with 16 points, followed by Alexis Alexander with 13 points and Kira Gordon with 12 points. The 49ers capitalized on 9 of 21 3-point baskets with four players each hitting a pair. Charlotte used its size advantage to own a 45-36 rebound advantage and block seven shots. The 49ers shot 45 percent for the game with GSU coming it at just 37 percent.

“We had the rebound advantage (22-19) in the first half and got to the free throw line 10 times to their four, but then in the second half they got more aggressive and had a 23-17 board advantage and got to the free throw line 26 times to our 6,” head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. “We cut back on our turnovers today and had just 10 to show improvement and we shot 88 percent from the free throw line to mark that improvement. We used 12 players as we continue to evaluate and see where we are here at the start of the year with so many new players.”

Georgia State returns to action Saturday at the Sports Arena when the Panthers host the North Florida Ospreys at 2 p.m.

Troy Women Fall to Hot-Shooting Belmont
NASHVILLE – The Troy women’s basketball team was locked into a high-scoring contest, but came out on the wrong end of a 102-93 loss to Belmont at the Curb Event Center on Sunday.

Both teams shot well, but Belmont shot 54 percent (34-of-63) overall and 50 percent (11-of-22) from deep. The Bruins also attempted nearly three times as many free throws as the Trojans.

Troy (2-2) came out hot, hitting six 3-pointers in the first quarter to take a nine-point lead. However, Belmont (5-1) responded with seven 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a four-point lead, 48-44, into halftime.

Amanda Mendoza scored 16 in the first half to lead Troy, including 4-of-4 from deep. She finished 5-of-6 from deep and scored 19 points with a game-high six assists.

Ashley Beverly Kelley scored in double figures for the 18th straight game and led Troy with 20 points. However, the Sun Belt’s leading scorer struggled from deep, going just 2-of-10. Troy’s starting post players, Amahni Upshaw and Caitlyn Ramirez, combined to go 12-of-17 from the floor and scored 14 and 16 points, respectively.

The Bruins stayed hot in the second half and led by as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter. Troy, however, cut the lead to five, 88-83, with 3:25 remaining. That is when Belmont’s Kylee Smith hit her fifth 3-pointer, a contested attempt from the corner. Beverly Kelley then missed an open 3-point look on what was that kind of night for the Trojans.

Belmont made two free throws to move the lead back to double digits with just 2:37 remaining and Troy never got closer than six points down the stretch.

Smith led five Belmont players in double figures with 24 points, including freshman point guard Darby Maggard who had 23 points, including 8-of-8 from the line. Belmont hit 23-of-28 from the free throw line while Troy was just 7-of-10, including zero attempts in the first half.

Troy finished the game shooting 48 percent (38-of-80) overall but hit just 10-of-32 (31 percent) 3-pointers, settling for a lot of open looks from beyond the arc, which contributed to the low free throw numbers.

The Bruins, who came in outrebounding teams by an average of 17 rebounds per game, outrebounded Troy just 40-36 on the night. Kristen Emerson led Troy with eight rebounds and also recorded three blocks. Sally McCabe led Belmont with 11 rebounds to go along with 16 points for the lone double-double of the game.

The Trojans have a quick turnaround as they return to the court on Tuesday when Nicholls visits Trojan Arena for a 5:15 p.m. contest.
