Roberts, McKay Post Career Highs as ULM Sweeps Day One of Tiger Classic

NASHVILLE – The ULM softball squad found itself on the right side of two wins Friday in the first day of the Tiger Classic held at Tiger Softball Field.

The Warhawks had to fight off an offensive explosion in a 14-10 triumph over Northern Kentucky and got some key hits from freshman Sydney McKay in a 5-2 win over Butler.

ULM 14, Northern Kentucky 10

Junior left fielder Rochelle Roberts hit two home runs and recorded five RBIs in a 14-10 slugfest that ended in a ULM victory over Northern Kentucky in the Tiger Classic opener Friday at Tiger Softball Field.

The last time a Warhawk recorded multiple home runs and at least four RBIs in a game was May 3, 2014 when Alexis Cacioppo achieved the feat with two homers and six RBIs at UL Lafayette. This marked the first win in six games during Corey Lyon’s tenure when the opponent scored 10 or more runs.

Roberts hit the first homer to centerfield on the first pitch of the game. Senior Faith Bohack then singled, stole second and advanced to third on an illegal pitch which walked freshman Sydney McKay. McKay also stole second before senior Amye Barre plated Bohack on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

NKU (0-1) counterpunched in the bottom half of the first with two home runs including a grand slam from sophomore third baseman Kate Bartolovich which put six on the board for the Norse. That home run ended Paige Porter’s outing, handing the reins over to freshman Katlynn Kaminski who ended the inning by forcing an Emma Coons flyout to McKay in right field.

ULM (5-2), however, clawed its way back into the game by scoring two in the top of the second on illegal pitches after sophomore catcher Samantha Agamaite sparked the offense with a leadoff triple. The Warhawks’ offense followed up with five in the top of the third on sophomore Cheyanne Lyon’s two-run homer to right and Roberts’ second home run, a three-run shot, to center which gave ULM a 9-6 edge.

The Warhawks added another run in the top of the fourth. After junior Vanessa Garcia walked to start the inning, Barre hit a double to left center to put runners on second and third with none out. Garcia then scored with two outs on a wild pitch.

Kaminski allowed just one hit thru her first 3.1 innings pitched before getting into a jam in the bottom of the fifth. She hit Norse outfielder Zahrya McFarland with the bases loaded before allowing a Paige McQueen single to shorten the gap at 10-8.

Kaminski then walked Alina Maher to end her outing and gave way to junior Melanie Coyne with a one-run lead, two outs and the bases loaded. Coyne hit Coons which tied the game at 10 before popping out Sydney Ferrante to the mound to end the inning.

After both teams went scoreless in the sixth, the Warhawks made their last charge in the top of the seventh. Junior McKinley Marks led off with a single before Lyon walked on an illegal pitch, putting freshman pinch runner Victoria Pederson at third.

Agamaite then advanced freshman Megan Shaw, who pinch ran for Lyon, on a sacrifice bunt before junior Sidney Coy scored Pederson on a fielder’s choice and Roberts singled to center which scored Shaw. McKay would add two more insurance runs on a bases-clearing triple to right center, giving the Warhawks a 14-10 advantage heading to the final half inning.

Coyne shut the door by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh, earning her third win of the season.

ULM 5, Butler 2

Freshman Sydney McKay notched a career-high three RBIs and Coyne (3-1) pitched her third complete game of the season as ULM bested Butler 5-2 Friday afternoon at Tiger Softball Field.

In the bottom of the first, Roberts reached first on a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a Bohack sacrifice bunt. McKay then lined out to right field which brought home Roberts, giving ULM (6-2) an early 1-0 lead.

After Coy and Roberts strung together back-to-back singles in the bottom of the third, McKay struck again with a triple down the right field line which scored both and gave Coyne more leeway at 3-0.

Those runs proved to be crucial as Butler (2-4) responded by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth. Junior center fielder Brandyce Sallee hit a solo home run to center, and sophomore third baseman Alyssa Lach singled before being plated by freshman pitcher Kaitlin Doud’s triple to right. Coyne then struck out Bulldog catcher Riley Carter swinging to leave Doud stranded at third to end the inning.

The Warhawks then added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth in an unorthodox fashion. Following a Garcia walk, Barre struck out swinging which should have ended the inning. Butler’s catcher, however, overthrew the first baseman on the wild pitch, allowing both runners to score.

After the two run-fourth, Coyne did not allow a hit and struck out five of the final 10 batters she faced.

Roberts finished 2-4 with a stolen base; Marks got on base all three times at the plate, and Coy raised her average to .375 after going 2-3 at the dish and scored a run.

The Warhawks return to action tomorrow, facing host Tennessee State at 11:15 a.m. inside Tiger Softball Park. This will be ULM’s first true road test of the season.

Game One – Houston Baptist
Two Houston Baptist errors and one Bobcat hit in the first inning led to three runs scored for Texas State. Kelli Baker made her way to the bases to start the day after an error by the Huskies third baseman. A walk by Bianca Prado set Ariel Ortiz up for runners on first and second with no one out. Ortiz proceeded to lay down a sacrifice bunt to move her teammates to second and third.

A single up the middle by Corrina Liscano scored the first two Bobcats runs of the day in the first. Liscano ultimately scored the third run of the day after the second Houston Baptist error of the inning.

The Bobcats added one more in the second and in the third inning, Texas State strung together six hits to score six runs and put the game out of reach. A walk by Kendall Wiley followed by a single by Taylor Webb started off the inning with two on and no outs. Texas State ultimately stranded three runners as 11 Bobcats made it to the plate in the fourth.

Liscano made her way to the base paths after getting hit by a pitch on the next at bat and she proved to be the third Bobcat run of the inning. The 'Cats finished with three hits in the inning.

After a scoreless second, Texas State tacked on four more in the bottom of the third. Ortiz hit her second double of the day to lead off the inning which sparked six out of the next seven batters to reach base safely.

Back-to-back walks issued in the top of the fourth inning by Williams were the only blemishes on the stat sheet resulting in her no-hitter.

Wiley went 3-for-3 in the game against MVSU with one RBI and two runs scored. Ortiz finished the second game going 2-for-2 from the plate with two doubles and one RBI. She scored both times she made it on base. Kimberlin Naivar also notched two hits for the Bobcats in three at bats. She finished with a run scored and an RBI.

The Bobcats finished the day with a team batting average of .442 with 19 hits and 18 runs scored. Ortiz hit three doubles and Baker recorded her first triple of the season. Texas State pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and just three walks allowed.

Texas State will take to the field for a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning with Abilene Christian at 1:15 p.m. The Bobcats have already competed against the Wildcats twice this season in the opening tournament of the season. Texas State is 2-0 against Abilene Christian this season and 3-0 all-time.

The Mountaineers fell to 0-7 on the season while the Vikings improved to 4-2 and Coastal Carolina was sitting at 1-5 prior to its game against Seton Hill tonight. No-Hitter, Walk Off Seal Pair of Victories for GSU

ATLANTA – Senior Katie Worley pitched a no-hitter to beat Miami (Ohio) 3-0 and freshman Reagan Morgan lined a two-run walk off single to beat Maryland 4-3, securing two GSU wins at the Panther Invitational Friday at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.

GSU 3, Miami (Ohio) 0

“I wasn’t even sure that it was a no-hitter until the final out and my teammates told me,” Worley said. “I knew I was pitching well, but I try to not think about that kind of stuff.”

Worley’s second no-hitter in her career helped GSU take down Miami (Ohio) 3-0 in the first of two Panther games Friday. The senior struckout six and walked one through the complete-game shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season and lower her ERA to a team-best 2.02. Worley’s run support came from an Ivie Drake home run and a two-run double from Mandy Blackwell in the fifth inning. Blackwell’s five RBI lead the team this season.

Worley’s first no-hitter came on March 7 last season and was the first for GSU since 2011. Today’s seven scoreless innings mark 12 consecutive for Worley without allowing an earned run.

GSU 4, Maryland 3

Georgia State fell behind 1-0 to Maryland in the Panthers’ second game of the day. The Terrapins scored in the first off GSU starter Annie Davis, who settled in to allow one earned on just four hits through 5.1 innings. The game took a crazy turn when Maryland made a pithcing change in the fifth inning. The Terps brought in Madison Martin with one out and runners on the corners. Martin was then called for three straight illegal pitches, scoring both runners and giving GSU the 2-1 lead.

Maryland responded in the top of the sixth with two runs of their own after a GSU error extended the inning. For the second time in three days, Georgia State found themselves down one with the game on the line. For the second time in three days, Georgia State rallied to walk off in front of the home crowd. This time, it was freshman Reagan Morgan who lined a single over the shortstop that scored Cassidy Faulk and Ivie Drake to win it for the Panthers, 4-3.

The Panther Invitational continues with four more games tomorrow, including Georgia State against No. 5 Alabama at 12:30 p.m. The Panthers knocked off the Crimson Tide in 2012 when Alabama was the No. 2 team in the country.

UL-L and Oregon Split Friday's Top 10 Battle

LAFAYETTE – The seventh-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team and No. 5 Oregon split a doubleheader on Friday in front of a crowd of 2,273 at Lamson Park as the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics got underway.

Kara Gremillion's two-run double in the fourth inning of the opening game snapped a scoreless tie and Alex Stewart protected the lead as the Ragin' Cajuns (6-1) posted a 3-2 triumph.

Cheridan Hawkins, who struck out nine and carried a shutout into the seventh inning, guided the Ducks (6-2) to a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

No. 7 Louisiana and No. 5 Oregon meet for a third and final time in the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics at 1 p.m., on Saturday.

Gremillion, a freshman from St. Amant HS, wound up doubling in each game of her Lamson Park debut. Stewart (4-0, 1.00 ERA) claimed her second victory over a ranked team, overall, and first in a game that she started (defeated No. 14 Baylor in relief on April 11, 2015).

Friday's matchups marked the first time the two programs met at Lamson Park. The Cajuns snapped a five-game losing streak in the series, which Oregon leads 9-4, with the win in the opener.

Louisiana vs. Oregon Game 1
Stewart and Oregon starter Megan Kleist traded scoreless frames through the first three innings of Game 1. Stewart didn't allow a Ducks baserunner past second base, while scattering three hits, during the timeframe. Kleist escaped a bases loaded jam in the second inning.

Gremillion's run-scoring double in the fourth was set up by back-to-back singles from DJ Sanders and Sara Corbello to lead off the inning. She later scored, what would prove to be an insurance run for the Cajuns, when Haley Hayden singled two at bats later.

Stewart kept the momentum on the Cajuns' side by retiring the Ducks in order in the bottom half of the fourth.

Oregon would climb back into the game in the bottom of the fifth getting a run off a sacrifice fly from Nikki Udria and two-out double by Alyssa Gillespie to trim the Louisiana lead to 3-2.

The last threat to Stewart came in the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back two-out singles from Koral Costa and Hailey Decker gave the Ducks a runner in scoring position. Stewart induced a ground out from Geri Ann Glasco to end the inning, then worked around a two-out single in the seventh inning to secure the victory.

Hayden posted a game-high two hits (2-for-4) for Louisiana, her third multiple-hit game of the season. Stewart did not issue a walk in her seven innings of work, extending her string of walk-free innings pitched to start the season to 21.

Louisiana vs. Oregon Game 2
Kylee Jo Trahan and the Ragin' Cajuns were headed for a scoreless first inning in a matchup with Oregon All-American pitcher Cheridan Hawkins until a high pop fly near the back of the infield fell in between Cajuns shortstop DJ Sanders, second baseman Hayden and center fielder Aleah Craighton.

The ball the dropped in between the Cajuns' defenders allowed Gillespie, who reached on a bunt single and advance to third on a throwing error by Gremillion, to score for the early lead. An additional run was tacked on as Jenna Lilley followed with an RBI single.

Janelle Lindvall added to the Ducks' lead in their next at bat, launching a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning for a 3-0 edge.

Hawkins, who set the tone early by retiring the Cajuns in order in the first two innings, continued to command the flow of the game by facing only one over the minimum from the third through fifth inning.

Oregon boosted its lead to six runs in the fifth inning as Costa belted a two-run home run on the second at bat of the frame and Glasco later notched an RBI single.

Gremillion picked up her second double of the day in the top of the sixth inning and Lexie Elkins helped the Cajuns break through on the scoreboard with a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning.

The Cajuns would make Hawkins battle to get the final outs of the game that she needed. Kelsey Vincent followed up Elkins' home run with a single and two batters later Sara Corbello unleashed a line drive home run over the left field fence to trim the Ducks' lead to 6-3.

Despite the loss, Trahan continued an impressive trend for the Ragin' Cajuns pitching staff as she worked five innings and did not allow a walk. Victoria Brown did issue a walk in her inning of relief (sixth inning), but that was only the fifth walk the Louisiana pitching staff has allowed in 42 innings pitched this season.

The homers by Elkins and Corbello and Gremillion's double extend the trios hitting streaks to three games, the longest active on the Cajuns' squad heading into Saturday's Louisiana Classics action.

Elkins picked up her sixth home run of the season and the 62nd of her career which leaves her four shy of tying Gabriele Bridges (2008-11) for fourth place in school history.

Mavs approach history with Day 1 sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team tied its best start since 1993 after sweeping a doubleheader to open the Maverick Invitational at Allan Saxe Field on Friday.

UTA (8-0) lays just two wins from the program's best start in history, as the Mavs were 9-0 to open the 1980 season. The Mavericks clipped Princeton 3-2 to open the day and well-executed situational hitting carried the team to a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State.

The Mavs rounded up 12 hits on the day led by Sandra Mendoza's 3-for-6 performance with three RBI. The sophomore has registered a hit in all eight games of the season. Senior Britnea Barilli earned the two walks she needed to move into second on UTA's all-time career walk list. The left fielder now owns 105 in a Maverick uniform, 11 recorded this season.

"I was really proud of the way they competed," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "They were put in some difficult situations and they kept composed and battled. We were behind in the second game and they were able to stay focused, chip away and find a way to win.

"I love their energy. Even though we're not playing at our peak performance, as a team, the chemistry is keeping us in these games."

Up next in the Maverick Invitational, UTA mirrors its Friday schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mavs open against Princeton at 11 a.m. and turn to South Dakota State at 1:30 p.m.

Game 1: UT Arlington 3, Princeton 2

Mendoza extended her hit streak in UTA's first-ever meeting with Princeton (1-1). Her single in the bottom of the second plated the team's first pair of runs, both singles from Kacey Everett and Krista Rude.

Everett and Rude were both 2-for-3, and Mendoza went 1-for-3 with two RBI. The Mavs tallied six hits to Princeton's seven.

Samantha Clakley improved to 3-0 in her third start of the season. The freshman struck out four, while allowing just two runs - one earned - and two walks.

A sacrifice fly from Shelbi Sikes scored the eventual winning run in pinch runner Cy'Andria Newton in the bottom half of the fifth. Newton represented Britnea Barilli, who recorded the 105th walk of her career and 11th of the season. The senior has reached base in each of the first seven games this season.

"Coming up clutch is something we focus on," Fox said. "Those two out RBI's and they've done a good job of taking quality at-bats when there's runners in scoring position. It's a sign of maturity from the group."

Mendoza made a clutch diving stop on a ground ball to second base that left two Princeton runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth. The Tigers still managed to tie the ballgame 2-2 on a single down the left field line an inning later.

Game 2: UT Arlington 2, South Dakota State 1

The Mavericks completed the sweep in the bottom of the fifth against South Dakota State (0-7), when Rude led the inning off with a single and was brought home on a one-out double from Mendoza.

Mendoza was 2-for-3 with a RBI in her eighth consecutive game with a hit. Rude was 1-for-2 with a run.

"I couldn't have done it without the rest of the team," Mendoza said. "It was a fundamental inning. We got a sacrifice bunt down. If we didn't do that, then I wouldn't have gotten the opportunity."

Brooklynne Simbeck (3-0) tossed 3.2 innings, allowing just three base knocks, a career-high four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Clakley, the Game 1 starter, made an appearance in the top of the seventh and pitched herself out of a jam to earn her second-career save.

Sam Montes, who was replaced in the top of third, was responsible for five hits and a run in 2.1 innings.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, Brianna Burchianti made room for a Maverick rally with a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Sikes single. Mallory Foster then reached on an infield single, causing Burchianti to score UTA's tying run as the ball bounced away from the third baseman.

South Dakota State struck first in the top of the third when an attempt to steal second distracted from a runner traveling from third.

"We're just going to keep fighting and keep on hitting," Mendoza said. "Tomorrow we want to come out and hit the ball better. We're hitting a lot of balls straight at people, so we just have to find the holes."
