No. 3 Texas State rallies for walk-off win over No. 6 Troy

Mobile, Ala. – Down a run heading into its final at bat, the No. 3 seed Texas State rallied behind a game-tying solo home run from sophomore Jaelyn Young and a walk-off walk in the eighth to win 3-2 against No. 6 seed Troy in the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship.

Texas State (37-18) advances in the winners’ bracket of the double elimination tournament to face No. 2 seed, and host, South Alabama at 12:30 p.m. CT on Thursday. Troy (31-24) plays an elimination game tomorrow against the losing team from the 10 a.m. CT matchup of No. 1 UL Lafayette vs. No. 4 Georgia State.

The win was the first ever by Texas State in a Sun Belt Conference softball tournament.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Young stepped to the plate and hit a no-doubt blast over the left field fence to tie the score at 2-2. The Bobcats used four straight walks in the bottom of the eighth, capped by Young’s free pass with the bases loaded, to walk off with the victory.

Sophomore Randi Rupp went the distance for Texas State. She struck out 10 batters, scattered five hits and allowed two runs to improve her record to 27-10 this season. Redshirt junior Rachel Rigney (1-3) took the loss after going seven innings and allowing three earned runs.

The 2016 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship resumes at 10 a.m CT on Thursday morning from Jaguar Field in Mobile, Ala.
