No. 3 Georgia State uses five-run first inning to advance past No. 7 ULM

Troy, Ala. – No. 3 seed Georgia State used a five-run first inning to earn a 5-2 win vs. No. 7 seed ULM in the first round of double elimination play at the 2017 Sun Belt Softball Championship.
The Panthers (34-21) advance to face No. 2 seed Texas State at Noon CT tomorrow. The Warhawks (30-27) fall into the elimination bracket and will play their first elimination game at 3 p.m. CT tomorrow at the Troy Softball Complex.
Georgia State put five runs on the board in its first at bat. Kirsten McMonigle singled home Morgan Brown before Megan Litumbe hit a two-RBI double to plate McMonigle and Ivie Drake. Remington Hasty doubled in Litumbe and and Drake before Mandy Blackwell plated Kensey Caldwell on a single.
Those were all of the runs that this year’s Newcomer of the Year award winner Kinsely Jennings needed as she scattered five hits and allowed one earned run in five innings pitched. Jennings improved to 18-10 on the year with the win, while ULM’s Jessie Watts took the loss and fell to 3-4.
