No. 4 South Alabama moves on with 5-0 win vs. No. 5 UTA
Troy, Ala. – The No. 4 seed South Alabama advanced with a 5-0 victory against No. 5 seed UTA in the first round of double elimination play at the 2017 Sun Belt Softball Championship.
The Jaguars (34-18) advance to face top seed Louisiana in tomorrow’s first game of the quarterfinal round at 10 a.m. CT at the Troy Softball Complex. The Mavericks fall into the elimination bracket and will face the losing team from game six of the tournament between No. 2 seed Texas State and No. 7 seed ULM or No. 3 seed Georgia State.
South Alabama pitcher Devin Brown paced the Jags by firing a one-hit shutout. Brown struck out eight batters and threw 19 first-pitch strikes against 25 batters faced to improve to 18-6 this season. UTA pitcher Sam Clakley took the loss to fall to 24-13.
The Jags strung together five runs across four innings. Aly Smith notched a single-game career high of 3 RBI on two base hits. Her first plated Amanda Minahan and Abby Krzywiecki in the bottom of the second, while her second single came in the bottom of the fourth and scored Krzywiecki.
