Rupps lead No. 2 Texas State past No. 3 Georgia State, 5-2
Troy, Ala. – Sara Rupp at the plate, and Randi Rupp in the circle powered No. 2 seed Texas State to a 5-2 win vs. No. 3 seed Georgia State in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Sun Belt Softball Championship.
Texas State (39-13) advances to face top seed Louisiana tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT for a spot in Saturday’s championship game. Georgia State (34-25) falls into the elimination bracket and will face No. 5 seed UTA in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m. CT on Thursday.
Sara Rupp hit her first home run of the season to break open a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when she smoked a three-run homer to left.
Randi Rupp took care of the rest as she scattered six hits and an earned run across seven innings with six strikeouts. Rupp improved to 26-8 on the season while Georgia State’s Kinsley Jennings took the loss to fall to 18-11.
Texas State took the early lead thanks to a two-run bottom of the second inning. Corrina Liscano doubled in Taylor Webb before Liscano scored on Bailee Carter’s single to left.
The Panthers cut the deficit when Remington Hasty smacked a solo homer to left in the top of the fourth inning, and then tied the score when Kensey Caldwell reached on an error that plated Kelsey McMonigle in the top of the sixth.
