Texas State wins in double OT; Louisiana nets first win

Grout Nets Winning Goal in Double Overtime
SHREVEPORT, La. – With the clocking ticking down in the second overtime period, Rachel Grout sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net with 28 seconds remaining to give the Texas State soccer team a 3-2 double overtime victory over Northwestern State Friday night at Byrd High Stadium. The victory snapped an eight-match winless streak that dated back to last season.

The Bobcats improved its record to 1-2-1 and extended its undefeated streak to 11 matches over the Lady Demons, who dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Before TXST allowed NSU to take a shot in the first half, the Bobcats got off five attempts. Unfortunately, only one was placed on goal when Kaylee Davis had one of her career-high seven shots stopped by the Lady Demons' Alex Latham in the 37th minute.

TXST scored the first goal of the contest late in the 42nd minute when Jordan Kondikoff found Sydney Kammer, who finished near the corner of the box. It was Kammer's first career goal and the first assist of the year for Kondikoff.

Early in the 54th minute, Kira Zapalac stole a ball from defender and ripped a shot into the lower left corner of the net from the top of the box to extend the Bobcats' lead to 2-0. For the senior, it was her first goal of her career since the 2015 season.

It appeared that TXST was on its way to a shutout victory until a shot from NSU's Gabriella Gamboa was accidentally knocked into the net on a clearance attempt by a Bobcat defender to cut the lead in half with just under 13 minutes left on the clock.

Gamboa went on to score halfway through the 81st minute on a deep shot after receiving the ball from Cache Haley to tie the match.

The Bobcats had three good looks during the rest of regulation. Davis put two shots on net and Renny Moore took a crack at goal but the ball went wide of the post.

After neither team recorded a shot in the first extra period, TXST got three attempts off in the first five minutes of the second overtime. Two were blocked and Davis saw her fourth shot of the day be stopped by Latham.

Grout scored the match-winning goal after getting the ball on a pass from Jamie Brown. It was Grout's ninth career goal and fifth time she has scored the contest winner. The assist for Brown was her second of her career and first this season.

Overall, the Bobcats outshot NSU 23-10 and held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Along with Davis' game-high seven attempts, Kassi Hormuth, Genesis Turman and Kammer all took three shots apiece.

Kathryn Budde made her second straight start between the posts. The sophomore did not make a save as only two of the 10 shots from the Lady Demons were on goal.

Next up for the Bobcats is a 1 p.m. match at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. The contest will take place at the turf field at Nacogdoches High School.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Richard Moodie
Overall thoughts on the game: "It's the same reaction as the other three games. I'm disappointed for the girls. I'm not disappointed in how they played, just disappointed for them. We're chapping at the door with these top teams and you want to see us get across the finish line. It's a shame because it was a great performance. Two little mistakes and you give them a few chances and they punished us. I thought on the night overall, we were the better team."

On his team's offensive performance: "As a coach, I've always had an attack-minded philosophy. In the Auburn and Florida State games, we maybe gave them a little too much respect and sat off them. Tonight, we said let's go for it. Let's just jump down their throat. I thought we created a lot of havoc in the first 10 minutes and they didn't know how to answer it. If that goal comes a bit later for us, it might have helped the game, but I still thought we were chapping at the door. We had a couple of good chances that, if we put them in, it's a different game."

On Alabama's game-winning goal: "It's one of those ones where, Steffi Hardy came out with an injury, Ashleigh Pyle came out because we were going to use her somewhere else and that left side was new. That's tough to come into a game with this intensity and try to catch up. That's hard to do. New legs, not sure what the tempo was, being thrown into the deep end… It's not one individual's fault for that goal. Good teams punish you and they punished us."

The Jaguars host Jacksonville State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., a game preceded by Alabama vs. Troy at noon.

Cajuns Beat Southeastern Louisiana 1-0 For First Win
LAFAYETTE – Freshman Una Einarsdottir scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in the 31st minute to help lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns to their first win of the 2017 season, beating the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions 1-0 here in Hammond at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

The win, being the first for the Cajuns, improves their record to 1-3-0 on the season. While the loss for Southeastern Louisiana drops their record down to 1-3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): Einarsdottir came out of the gate aggressive for the Cajuns, ripping their first shot of the game just wide in the 12th minute setting the tone for the game going forward.

Southeastern Louisiana, themselves, were aggressive as well putting the game's first two shots on goal, first in 14th minute followed up shortly with another shot on goal in the 17th minute.

But Cajuns sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee, making her first start of the season, was up to the task stopping both shots for two quick saves maintaining the score at 0-0 within the first 17 minutes of up tempo action.

The teams went back and forth, in what was a physical game, but it was the physicality that gave the Cajuns what they'd been working towards, a lead.

In the 31st minute the Cajuns earned their first penalty kick of the season, and Einarsdottir was tasked with cashing in on the big opportunity.

Einarsdottir confidently stepped up to the spot, and in a moment where she looked more like a upperclassmen than a freshman, ripped the ball past the Lady Lion's Michaela Hawthorn to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

From there the Cajuns locked things down and the game entered the break with Louisiana sitting on top 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): The Cajuns came out the gate, much like the first half, aggressive and looking to set the tone and senior Kimberly Grasso put a shot on goal in the 54th minute showing that the Cajuns weren't just going to sit back and let Southeastern Louisiana attack without worry.

Louisiana faced a pressing Lady Lion team through the early parts of the second half, with the Lady Lions ripping three shots in less than a 10-minute period with the first shot coming in the 58th minute and the third coming in the 66th.

The tone that the Cajuns set from the start, didn't change even with the lead and the Cajuns kept their attack on, using offense as the best defense to help them get the win.

Starting in the 71st minute, with Lee making a save on the Lady Lions only shot during the stretch in the 73rd minute, the Cajuns ripped off six shots and it wasn't until the 86th minute did Southeastern Louisiana record another shot.

Freshman Ally Busalacchi started off the Cajuns powerful stretch with a shot on goal in the 71st minute. Senior Denice Emokpae joined the party with a shot that flew wide in the 73rd minute.

Sophomore Erika Sierra, showcasing her impressive endurance, ripped a shot wide in the 76th minute but she wasn't finished and she forced Hawthorn to make two saves within four minutes.

The first coming in the 78th minute and Sierra quickly followed that up with yet another shot on goal in the 82nd minute.

Not looking to be left out, senior Ashleigh Cade finished the Cajuns superb stretch with a shot that soared just over the crossbar.

Lee made sure that she put the final stamp on the Cajuns first win of the season with a big save in the 86th minute, making sure the Cajuns hard work didn't go to waste.

When the final whistle blew, with the score sitting at 1-0, the Cajuns had a celebratory bus ride in front of them back to Lafayette as the victors.

NOTEWORTHY: Lee started and played all 90 minutes recording four saves while facing nine shots from the Lady Lions; Joining Lee in the 90-minute club were Sierra, who finished with three shots, two of which were on goal, senior Whitney Taggart, junior Sarah Kozlowski, sophomore Kaylie Powell and senior Rebecca Foley; Grasso, Busalacchi and freshman Grace Champagne all came off the bench each recording one shot on goal; For the third straight game the Cajuns lead their opponent in shots finishing this game with 12 shots, six of which were on goal, to Southeastern Louisiana's nine.

UP NEXT: The Cajuns return to the pitch on Sunday Sep. 3, when at 6 p.m. the Northwestern State Lady Demons travel to Lafayette and the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex. The game will have free admission and for those fans who can't make the trip out the game will be streamed live on Ragincajuns.com for free along with live stats.

Famili picked up her fifth and sixth goals of the year. First, she found the back of the net in the 20th minute on an unassisted goal. Famili followed up in the 24th minute. On that second goal, Elisabeth Rockhill (three assists on the season) broke down the left side of the field and pushed a pass to the center of the pitch to allow Famili to beat the Eagle goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead.

Ponder Helps A-State to 3-0 Shutout of Oral Roberts
JONESBORO, Ark. (9/1/17) – Kelsey Ponder stopped all 11 shots placed on goal by Oral Roberts and Arkansas State earned a 3-0 shutout victory over the Eagles Friday afternoon at the A-State Soccer Park.

“We had strong, solid defending being responsible doing the hard stuff,” A-State head coach Brian Dooley said. “That’s kind of been our makeup to this point. I think the first 25 minutes people saw what we are capable of doing. Shots, I don’t care about that stat, but there was one that I thought was a lapse on defense. Sometimes, we’re okay with people shooting because we have a good goalkeeper, whether that’s Kelsey (Ponder), Megan (McClure) or Alexis (Phillipe). They can handle those shots and do their job which allows us to defend and concentrate our defending in a more dangerous space. Today was a perfect example of that, as we got our goals and then fought the game.”

A-State (2-2-0) controlled much of the first half, building a 2-0 lead at the break. The Red Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute as Maggie Ertl scored her first career goal. A throw in was dribbled around near the top of the box before Abby Harris gathered for possession and found Ertl near the top of the box. Ertl converted as she tapped in the goal to the back left corner of the net.

Nearly three minutes later, A-State built the 2-0 lead. Sarah Sodoma stole possession at midfield and used her speed to set up a great look on goal. After getting out in front of the defenders, she had just the goalkeeper to beat and chose to go to the back right corner for her third goal this season.

Oral Roberts (1-3-0) pressured for the final 10 minutes of the first half, putting up seven shots, four of which were on goal. The Eagles played much of the second half as they did the first, pressuring the A-State defense with many attempts. Oral Roberts added seven shots on goal in the second half, but Ponder stopped each of them to finish with 11 stops.

In the 85th minute, Oral Roberts was whistled for a handball in the box and A-State was awarded a penalty kick. Dana O’Boye stepped to the penalty spot and buried the attempt for her third goal on the season.

“We said from the start as a staff, that this group of student-athletes have the right mentality. We lost two very difficult games, against very good teams, and this is a very good team as well. They have some close results in a few games that made us a little worried on a few matchups. We stepped up today and have a long term goal in mind. If we hit a loss along the way, it’s not going to break us. Saint Louis is going to be a top-25 team and we were 3-2 with them. Every time we step out there, I get happier and more excited about what we can do as a team.”

The Red Wolves make a short trip to Central Arkansas for a 7 p.m. contest Sunday. A-State returns home to play UT Martin next Friday at 4 p.m.

App State Draws to 1-1 Tie Versus UNCG
BOONE, N.C. –– Appalachian State University women's soccer (0-3-2) drew to a 1-1 tie against UNCG (1-3-1) on Friday evening at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

Each team during the match was on target with their shot attempts, as a combined 15-of-30 shots were near the frame. Appalachian shot a season-high seven shots on goal in the third-straight contest the match has resulted in overtime.

Both goals scored were in the second frame with Ava Dawson earning her first-career goal that just broke the 60-minute mark to give App a 1-0 lead.

Twelve minutes later, the Spartans tied things up as Hita Quiqui would score her first goal of the season as well to push the score at 1-apiece. The Mountaineers had three more opportunities by Erin Settle including an attempt with six seconds left in regulation but Tyler Cooper came up with the save.
