Kammer Celebrates Birthday with Match-Winner
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman forward Sydney Kammer celebrated her birthday on Friday in style, netting the only goal of the match in Texas State's 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The victory sees the Bobcats improve to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play while the Eagles are now 3-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference action.
Almost halfway through the 9 minute, GS was called for a foul towards the right side of the field around 25 yards from goal. Brooke Ramsey sent in the free kick but the ball was knocked out towards the left side of the box by an Eagle defender. Alyssa Phelan was there to head the ball back into traffic, where Kammer was able to get a toe on the ball and send it past the goalkeeper.
The score was Kammer's second of the season and her first career match-winner. Phelan's assist was her second of the year.
Rachel Grout nearly extended the lead in the 21st minute when she got behind the backline and was one-on-one with the keeper. The senior tried to chip her attempt over the goalie but she closed the gap so it bounced off her chest away from danger.
In the 40th minute, Kira Zapalac sent a low shot towards the left corner. However, the Eagles' Lauren Karinshak made a diving save to keep the visitors within a goal.
GS came out of halftime more aggressive and were able to draw a foul from 20 yards out and sitting directly in front of the goal halfway through the 52nd minute. Paige Hoover ripped a shot past the wall and slight past the right post.
During the 57th minute, Phelan sent in a corner kick that found the head of Genesis Turman. The sophomore's header attempt glanced off the crossbar and out of bounds for a goal kick.
In the waning seconds of the 61st minute, Grout flicked a long cross towards the net near the right post. Her shot attempt beat the keeper but crossed the end line on the wrong side of the post.
Kaylee Davis had two great opportunities to extend the lead in the 75th and 84th minutes. Both times she beat the defense with her speed to get to a long ball but sent her attempts towards the lower right corner just past the post both times.
Leading Texas State with four shot attempts was Davis. Grout took three shots and placed two of them on goal. Both Kammer and Turman took two shots apiece. Overall, the Bobcats outshot the Eagles 14-11, led 4-3 in shots on goal and attempted five corners to two.
Heather Martin recorded her first complete shutout of the season and fourth of her career between the posts. She made three saves with two of them coming in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Next on the schedule for TXST is a trip to Jonesboro, Arkansas to take on Arkansas State at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Bobcats enters the match in a four-way tie for first place in the Sun Belt standings with six points along with Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and the Red Wolves.
Reed's Heroics Lift A-State Soccer to Win
JONESBORO, Ark. (9/22/17) – Bailey Reed provided the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as the Arkansas State women’s soccer team defeat Little Rock 1-0 Friday afternoon at the A-State Soccer Park.
Reed’s goal broke a 0-0 stalemate and was setup by a fantastic run from Sarah Sodoma who chased down a long kick and drew the attention of the defense to near post before passing back to Reed at the top of the box who had a wide open look at the goal and buried the attempt.
The goal was the first of the season for the senior from Mexico, Mo., and it was the second assist of the year for Sodoma, who now leads the team with 12 points.
Little Rock had several chances to score on the Red Wolves (6-3-0, 2-1-0) throughout the afternoon and held a 20-7 advantage in shots, but had just a 7-4 edge in shots in goal. The Trojan’s (4-5-1, 0-1-1) best scoring chance occurred during the 78th minute on a kick from distance by Liesa Seifert that Kelsey Ponder was able to punch away before going into the net.
“When Kelsey made that incredible save I finally thought that this thing might finally go our way,” A-State head coach Brian Dooley said. “Sarah kept going inside all day and we finally told her to try the outside and when she did she gained the corner edge and sent the ball back to Bailey Reed for a great goal.”
Ponder made seven saves, four of which occurred in the second half. She now has 196 for her career is just four away from becoming the fourth goalkeeper in A-State history to record 200 saves in a career. She has also tied Susan Brown for the most shutouts in a career with seven after notching her third of the season on Friday.
A-State struggled to find ways to break Little Rock’s defense cleanly throughout the match. Reed had a solid attempt in the 60th minute that was swatted away by Megan Swanson, while Riley Ebenroth took a clean shot that Swanson was able to save as well.
“We were a step behind for most of the game,” Dooley said. “They are strong team and very physical and a technical team and you mix that in with your size makes it very difficult to play against them. They have two girls over six-foot tall and I really thought our kids did about as good of a job as you could expect because neither player got a clean head on any corner kick.”
The Red Wolves return to the field Saturday, Sept. 24 for a home matchup against Texas State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from the A-State Soccer Park.
Coastal Use Double Overtime to Defeat Troy
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team had a flair for the dramatic on Friday as freshman Mackenzie Gibbs evened the score with a minute left in regulation and senior Daniella Famili scored in the sixth minute of the second overtime period to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 win over Troy at CCU Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt while the Trojans fall to 3-7-2 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Despite needing overtime, Coastal controlled the tempo most of the match. CCU out-shot their opponents 13-to-3, including five on goal. The Trojans, however, did hold an 8-to-4 advantage in corner kicks..
Troy got on the board first. Julia Winter headed a cross from Lauren Aldrich from the left side of the box for the 1 - nil lead.
After intermission, the Chants came out with more energy and applied pressure but were unable to get the ball into the net to even the score until late. At the 89th minute, Gibbs put the last of three Chanticleer shots into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
The first overtime saw only one shot and that was from Troy, which just went wide.
In the second overtime, Coastal had a flurry of activity that led to the game-winning goal. Gibbs put her second shot on goal and allowed the Trojans goalie to pick up her third save of the night. Then fellow freshman Hannah Eiden put a shot on goal hitting the crossbar and bounding to Famili, who put it past the Troy goalie for the game-winning goal.
The goal was the seventh for Famili this season and her fourth game-winner.
Coastal Carolina will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 24, in Monroe, La., as they take on ULM at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
