Appalachian State Wins 2018 Sun Belt Women's Cross Country Championship

MOBILE, Ala. - The Appalachian State Mountaineers claimed the 2018 Sun Belt Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Mobile, Ala., edging out runner-up Texas State, 45-46, in the total team points.

The one-point differential marked the closest women’s cross country championship since 1995.

Texas State's Leslie Romero was the women's individual champion, crossing the line with a time of 17:22.91. Romero was named the league's Runner of the Year with her performance as well as Newcomer of the Year - having transferred into Texas State after last season.

App State's Mike Curcio was named Women's Cross Country Head Coach of the Year after guiding the Mountaineers to their second women's team title in the last three years. The Mountaineers had three top-ten finishers on Saturday with Phylissa Greeley earning fourth-place honors and Izzy Evely coming in fifth. Evely, as the highest finishing women's freshman in the race, was named Freshman of the Year. Elisa Sargent was ninth for App. All five runners for App were named All-Conference - having finished in the top 15.

The Bobcats finished second overall, led by Romero, with 46 points. Kendra Long was sixth for Texas State and Devina Schneider was tenth.

Arkansas State finished third as a team with 86 points, followed by Georgia State and South Alabama in fourth and fifth, respectively.

USA's Andonet Cheruiyot was the women's runner-up with a time of 17:26.36. A-State's Anaelle Charles finished third.
