FOLEY, Ala. - Texas State's Kaylee Davis scored her league-leading 18th goal in the matches 74th-minute to knot the score at one apiece, then held the Jaguars at bay for the final 36 minutes before a dominant penalty kick performance to advance to the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championship final for the first time in program history.
The Bobcats (11-5-3) advanced 4-2 on penalty kicks on Friday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. With the result, Texas State moves on to face the winner of Friday's final match between No. 2 Little Rock and No. 6 Georgia State. Sunday's championship airs on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. CT.
USA's season ends at 8-9-2.
The Jaguars took the early lead with a goal in the 18th-minute from Moa Ohman. Briana Morris and Helene Schjelderup assisted on the goal. USA held the Bobcats until Davis' score late in the second half.
Texas State outshot the Jaguars 26-17, nearly doubling their first half total in the second half (9-14). The Bobcats had several opportunities to win the match outright in the second half but USA keeper; Justice Stanford was able to keep those chances at bay.
The biggest threat in the match came late in the second half when Davis got past a USA defender and into the box. Her first shot caromed off the keeper, not once, not twice, but three times before the USA defense would clear the ball.
USA took the first shot in the penalty kick period with First Team All-Sun Belt keeper, Heather Martin, knocking the ball away. Texas State's Ally Kewish, Davis and USA's Abi Mills each made their next attempts before Hannah Godfrey's shot attempt would bounce off the top bar. Mackenzie Smith's shot found the back of the net, advancing the Bobcats to Sunday's final.
