MOBILE, Ala. - The South Alabama volleyball program will make its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, representing the Sun Belt Conference as its 2021 automatic qualifier.
The Jaguars (25-6) will open NCAA Tournament play on Thursday when it faces Miami at 3:30 p.m. CT at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla. The winner of Friday’s first-round match will face the winner between No. 16 national seed Florida and Florida A&M on Friday.
South Alabama won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2021, both of which were program firsts. The Jaguars set a program record for conference wins in a season with 15 and enter the NCAA Tournament on a 13-match win streak.
“It is such a big deal for us and a tremendous opportunity,” South Alabama head coach Jesse Ortiz said. “We’re extremely excited and looking forward to the opportunity. Florida is not that far away in terms of travel but I think, at this point in the season, you just work as hard as you can, do the very best you can in scouting, and prep for the couple of days you get, and you enjoy it.”
