Georgia Southern Makes First-Ever Sun Belt Soccer Tournament Championship Appearance

FOLEY, Ala. -  Trailing by a goal at halftime, fourth-seeded Georgia Southern scored twice in a four-minute span on Friday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex to defeat eighth-seeded ULM, 2-1, and advance to its first Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship Match in program history. 

Georgia Southern (11-6-4) will face second-seeded South Alabama in Sunday’s tournament championship. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start and will be broadcast on ESPN+. 

ULM (8-12) got on the board in the 37th minute when junior midfielder Paula Guba headed in the corner kick from freshman Mara Grutkamp. 

Down 1-0 at intermission, Georgia Southern benefited from an own goal in the 47th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Exactly four minutes later, senior midfielder Nora Falnes found senior midfielder Vala Kristin Theodorsdottir for her third goal of the season to put the Eagles in front, 2-1. 

Georgia Southern held a 16-9 edge in shots in the match with the Eagles holding a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. 

Both goalkeepers played the full 90 minutes. Georgia Southern’s Michaela English took the win with four saves, while ULM’s Hailey Hillock took the loss with seven saves.
