2022 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Awards & All-Conference Teams Announced

NEW ORLEANS – South Alabama senior forward Jasmine Greene was named the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year to highlight the 2022 Sun Belt Soccer Awards and All-Conference Teams, announced on Monday. The honors were voted upon by the league’s 14 head coaches. 

Georgia Southern won its first Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship 2022. 

In addition to being named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Greene also garnered the league’s Offensive Player of the Year honor as well as Newcomer of the Year. Greene, a Birmingham, Ala., native played in all 10 conference matches for the Jaguars and started in nine. She recorded five goals in two matches in October and totaled eight goals in league action. Greene scored a pair of goals three times on the year and played at least 50 minutes in every conference match. She leads the Sun Belt Conference in points (16), points per game (1.60), goals (8) and goals per game (.80).

Georgia Southern defender Sade Heinrichs was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. She led her team’s defense with 900 minutes played in 10 conference matches and helped the unit to a conference-best 0.2 goals-against average. Heinrichs, Monchengladbach, Germany, native organized a defensive structure that limited league foes to just two goals in 10 matches. The defensive unit ended the year on a scoreless streak of 546 minutes and 58 seconds, which marked a new school record. 

James Madison redshirt junior Alexandra Blom was named the league’s second-ever Goalkeeper of the Year. She played 883 minutes between the posts for the Dukes. She stopped 33 shots for a .892 save percentage. Blom, a Degerfors, Sweden, native, posted six shutouts in league play. She collected three or more saves in eight of nine matches in goal, including five-plus in two outings. She gave up just four goals in league play, and never gave up more than one goal in each match. She recorded nine shutouts on the year overall and is 10th in the nation in goals against average with a 0.473 showing.

South Alabama defender Gabriela Angulo was chosen as the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Angulo, a La Guaira, Vargas, Venezuela, native tallied two assists on the year as she led a defense that ranked third in goals allowed (5) and goals against average (0.50). She aided the Jaguars to record six shutouts, which was a mark tied for second in league play. The Jaguars outscored opponents 25-5 in league play. 

Georgia Southern head coach Chris Adams earned his first career Sun Belt Coach of the Year accolade. He guided his team to its first ever regular-season conference title with a 7-1-2 mark in league play this season. He managed a squad that allowed just two goals in conference play with eight shutouts. Georgia Southern posted a 0.20 goals-against average. Adams led the Eagles to six consecutive wins to close out the year and six straight shutouts to capture the regular season title. 

The 2022 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament will take place October 31-November 6 at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
