BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Arkansas State men and women lead the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, contested at the Birmingham CrossPlex, following the opening day of the event. Numerous meet records were also broken on Monday.
The Arkansas State men have totaled 58 points through five events. South Alabama is in second place with 47 points, while Louisiana is in third with 25. The Red Wolves women have charted 41 points through five events. Texas State is in second with 32 points, while Louisiana is in third with 23.
The final day of the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships begins at 9 a.m. CT Tuesday. Running events and the ESPN+ broadcast commence at 2 p.m. CT.
South Alabama’s Francois Prinsloo set a school record for the Jaguars in winning the men’s weight throw title with a throw of 19.54m/64-1.25. Arkansas State’s Aimar Palma Simo, who entered the meet with the top mark in the Sun Belt this season, placed second with a toss of 18.49m/60-8.
Texas State’s Anayah Washington won the women’s long jump and set a school record in the process with a leap of 6.21m/20-4.50. Washington defeated App State’s Peighton Simmons, who held the league’s top mark in the women’s long jump entering the meet. Simmons finished second with a personal-best mark of 6.10m/20-0.25.
Texas State’s Alyssa Wilson, a graduate transfer from UCLA, smashed the Sun Belt Conference meet record en route to winning the women’s weight throw with a toss of 21.65m/71-0.50. Wilson’s throw shattered the previous record of 20.74m/68-0.50, set by Georgia State’s LaPorscha Wells in 2017. At UCLA, Wilson was a six-time First-Team All-American and a three-time Second-Team All-American.
The Arkansas State men finished 1-2 in the men’s long jump with Carter Shell taking home his third indoor championship in the event with a leap of 7.79m/25-6.75. Shell was also the SBC indoor men’s long jump champion in 2019 and 2021. Teammate Courtney Thomas finished second with a mark of 7.56m/24-9.75.
Troy’s Maja Kuessner won the women’s high jump event with a leap of 1.78m/5-10. The performance marked a season-best for Kuessner. Kuessner bested the 2021 Sun Belt Champion, Katherine Stuckly from Texas State, who finished second.
South Alabama’s Kyle Rademeyer defended his conference championship in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 5.37m/17-7.25. Rademeyer has won the Sun Belt Indoor Championship in the men’s pole vault in each of his two years with the Jaguars.
Louisiana’s Sophie Daigle took over on the last lap of the women’s 5,000 meters to claim the event in a time of 16:52.88. She defeated Arkansas State’s Sophie Leathers, who entered the meet as the conference leader. Leathers finished second in 16:57.23.
South Alabama’s Kirami Yego, the 2021 Sun Belt Cross Country Men’s Individual Champion, captured the men’s 5,000-meter run and set the Sun Belt meet record in the process. He finished first in a time of 14:05.26, eclipsing the previous meet record of 14:06.94, set by South Alabama’s Zac Edwards in 2009.
Georgia State won the women’s distance medley relay in a time of 11:56.51. The Panthers’ quartet consisted of Emma Devis, Morgan Manley, Anouk Prop and Marine Garnier.
UTA was victorious in the men’s distance medley relay, clocking a time of 10:07.06. The Mavs’ foursome consisted of Jackson Cichon, Adam Herrera, Zion Smith and Marquentin Barnes.
Texas State’s Ben Collerton jumped out to a lead in the men’s heptathlon and has accumulated 3,252 points through the first four events. Earlier this season, Collerton set the Sun Belt Conference regular-season record in the event at 5,506 points. He will vie for the SBC Championship record of 5,444 points, set last season by South Alabama’s Graham Collins. In this year’s heptathlon, UTA’s Lucas Van Klaveren currently sits in second place with 3,168 points, while South Alabama’s Sebastian Reyneke is in third with 3,107 through four events.
Coastal Carolina sprinter Melissa Jefferson set the Sun Belt meet record in the semifinals of the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.26. That bested the previous meet record of 7.28, held by Arkansas State’s Sharika Nelvis in 2014.
UTA’s Joel Bengtsson smashed the Sun Belt meet record in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.81. The previous meet record was 7.93, set by Arkansas State’s Jamil Peeples in 2018.
