PENSACOLA, Fla. – Starr Jacobs, the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, scored a game-high 28 points and led second-seeded UTA to an 85-76 win against seventh-seeded Georgia Southern in the quarterfinal round of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Championship on Friday at the Pensacola Bay Center.
The Lady Mavs (18-7) advance to the semifinals of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. UTA will face third-seeded Louisiana on Friday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Jacobs connected on 9-of-17 shots from the field and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. She also added nine rebounds. She was one of four UTA players to score in double-figures - a list that also included Terryn Milton (15), Claire Chastian (14) and Katie Ferrell (11).
UTA shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field in the game, while Georgia Southern shot 36.8 percent (28-of-76). The Eagles held a 46-39 edge on the boards.
Georgia Southern (18-10) was led by a double-double from Taya Gibson, who recorded 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Terren Ward, the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Sixth Woman of the Year, also added 13 points and seven rebounds.
