FINAL RESULTS (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the fourth consecutive year, the Arkansas State men and women swept the Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day event, which was held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, concluded on Tuesday.

The Arkansas State men finished with 174.5 total team points, marking the most points scored in an SBC men’s indoor championship since 2014, and third most in the 33 year history of the event. Louisiana placed second with 126.5 points, while South Alabama was third with 120.5.

The Red Wolves women totaled 106.5 team points to claim the title. Coastal Carolina was second with 76.5 points and Texas State was third with 73.

The Red Wolves are the only current member of the Sun Belt to have ever swept the men’s and women’s indoor team titles in four consecutive years. They now have tied the record held by Middle Tennessee State, which swept the indoor titles in four consecutive years from 2001-04.

For the Arkansas State men, it was their 11th all-time Sun Belt indoor crown. For the women, it was their eighth Sun Belt indoor championship. Both programs lead the Sun Belt in total number of team championships. They marked the 20th and 21st conference championships (in all disciplines) under Arkansas State head coach Jim Patchell, making him the school’s winningest coach in terms of championship in A-State history.

The individual accolades also saw a tremendous jump, as 284 Sun Belt student-athletes recorded personal best finishes at the championships. An additional 70 student-athletes tied their best finish of the season.

The Sun Belt Championship Meet Records continued to fall at this year’s event, as 12 records were broken. Recent Sun Belt student-athletes have made their mark with 27 new records being posted in the last two years.

South Alabama distance runner Kirami Yego completed his sweep of the distance events on Tuesday with another first-place finish and Sun Belt record. He set the new benchmark Monday in the 5,000m and finished the 3,000m in 8:09.39. The record had stood since Joseph Chebet from Western Kentucky set the mark of 8:11.80 in February of 2012. Chebet went on to win both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon.

Pauline Meyer from Arkansas State earned her second individual title of the meet when she set a new mark in the women’s mile with a time of 4:46.88. The previous record was set in 2008 by ZamZam Sangau from Middle Tennessee, who finished in 4:48.27.

Texas State’s Sedrickia Wynn broke the Sun Belt 200m record in a blazing time of 23.19. The previous mark was set last year by Melissa Jefferson from Coastal Carolina, who went on to win the 2022 Indoor National Championship in the 200m. Jefferson’s speed transitioned to outdoor where she became a member of the USA 4x100m relay team that won a world championship in July of 2022. Currently, she is ranked No. 13 in the world in the women’s 100m. Wynn also laid claim to the 60m title with a personal best finish of 7.32.

Scovia Ayikoru from Georgia Southern broke the Sun Belt women’s 400m record in 53:17, a record that had stood since 2009, when Valerie Brown from Western Kentucky set the mark of 53.28. Ayikoru earned another gold as the women’s 4x400m relay team from Georgia Southern captured gold and a Sun Belt record in 3:42.47. Her teammates of Sofia Molina, Megan Bolton and Naj Watson broke a record that was set in 2016 by Texas State.

Texas State’s Dominick Yancy etched his name further into the Sun Belt record book with a 20.89 in the men’s 200m. The record remained untouched since Keyth Talley, former Pan American Junior Athletics gold medalist, set the mark in 2010. The Bobcats’ 4x400m relay team of Brian West, Taahir Kelly, Avery Veiseh and Yancy finished in 3:10.71 to mark a new Sun Belt record.

Ali Eren Unlu from ULM also set a new Sun Belt record in the men’s high jump with a 2.21m/7-3 showing to claim the gold. Texas State’s Daniel Harrold set a new Sun Belt benchmark in the men’s 60m hurdles with a time of 7.78.

Red Wolves’ freshman Hannes Fahl ended the second day with a pair of championships in the men’s mile and 800m. The newcomer finished the 800 with a time of 1:53.30, and the mile in 4:10.24.

James Madison’s Miranda Stanhope became the first Duke to win a Sun Belt track & field title in the 3,000m with a personal best time of 9:35.15. Coastal Carolina’s Alexis Glasco set a new personal best in the 60m hurdles to claim the title with a personal best finish of 8.08.

App State’s Jada Branch launched a personal best 12.85m/42-2 in the women’s triple jump to claim the title for the Mountaineers. Colette Uys from South Alabama also tallied a personal best throw of 16.13m/52-11 in the women’s shot put to earn gold.

Marshall’s Macie Majoy claimed the Thundering Herd’s first Sun Belt track title in the pole vault with a launch of 3.99m/13-1.

Another Arkansas State freshman had quite the showing at the championships as Myles Thomas set a personal best in the 60m with a time of 6.66 for the title.

Omar Austin claimed the first Sun Belt track & field gold medal for Southern Miss in the 500m with a personal best time of 46.98.
