NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University men’s basketball head coach Jeff Jones announced his retirement in a press conference Monday morning.
"I feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to coach college basketball for 41 years," said Jones. "These past 11 years at Old Dominion University have been especially rewarding. Basketball has given me a life that exceeded all of my expectations. It is hard to step away from coaching, but I will always be grateful to the people along the way who made this career possible. Thank you to the players, the assistants, the administrators, the fans, the families, and the friends who have been part of this journey – you will be a member of my team for life."
The 2023-24 campaign was Jones’ 32nd overall as a head coach and 11th at Old Dominion. He owns a 564-434 (.565) overall record including a 207-147 (.585) mark leading the Monarchs. In over three decades leading programs, Jones registered eight NCAA Tournament appearances, a dozen 20-win seasons and an NIT Championship.
Assistant coach Kieran Donohue will continue serving as the Monarchs’ interim head coach. Donohue assumed the role on Dec. 20 after Jones suffered a heart attack and underwent a stent procedure during the team's trip to the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Shortly after returning from Hawaii, Jones underwent prostate cancer treatment for the fourth time since his June 2015 surgery.
