FOLEY, Ala. - Making its second consecutive appearance in the title match and third since 2018, fourth-seeded Texas State secured its first Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Championship in a 1-0 victory over third-seeded ULM on Saturday evening at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
The Bobcats (10-3-7) earn the Sun Belt’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their first postseason opponent and destination during the NCAA Selection Show which airs on Monday, November 10 at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
Neither team tallied a shot through the first 15 minutes of the first half despite both sides taking possessions into enemy territory, as defense reigned supreme during that span. Texas State earned its first scoring opportunity early in the 31st minute when midfielder Alexis Montgomery delivered a perfectly touched pass on the ground down the center of the ULM (13-3-4) defense where Sadie Guzman touched a shot at the top of the box. However, ULM goalkeeper Jen Handy came charging in to make the stop, deflecting the shot with her right leg.
The Bobcats produced another golden scoring chance in the 42nd minute when Guzman collected a deflected pass inside the box before squaring a shot that hit directly off the crossbar. The opportunity led to another deflected shot and a corner kick, however, both sides went into the locker rooms scoreless at halftime.
Texas State went back on the attack early in the second half and capitalized early in the 54th minute. Midfielder Helen Alormenu touched a pass toward midfield where midfielder Matsuri Tsutsui sent a rolling pass approximately 25 yards ahead and between a pair of Warhawks on the back line. Guzman was there to collect once again before making a move to her left around the charging Handy. Guzman delivered a left-footed shot from the top left of the box and into the right pocket of the net to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
ULM put together a strong opportunity in the 81st minute when a cross into the box from the left wing skipped across a defender’s foot and landed in forward Skylar Blaise’s possession, but her left-footed attempt near the penalty kick marker sailed just over the crossbar as the threat was averted. The Bobcats would close out the final minutes and complete the shutout victory.
