STORRS, CT – Arkansas State’s season came to an end after suffering a 103-34 loss to No. 2-seeded UConn on Saturday.
The Red Wolves earned the Sun Belt’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after a thrilling 86-79 overtime victory over top-seeded James Madison in the conference tournament championship.
In the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Arkansas State was outshot 17.1 percent to UConn’s 58.8 and lost the turnover battle 20-12.
No Red Wolves were able to reach double-digit scoring figures, while three members of UConn scored 20-or-more points. The Huskies’ Azzi Fudd led all scorers with 27 points and added on seven assists and six rebounds.
After the Red Wolves got the first basket of the game, UConn went on a 22-0 run, forcing an Arkansas State timeout early in the first.
It would be all Huskies from there, as UConn carried a 66-16 lead into the half.
Arkansas State continued to press after the break, but the Huskies continued to have an answer, pulling away in the 103-34 win.
With a 21-11 record and a 15-3 mark in league play, the Red Wolves posted their best season since the 2015-16 campaign, when they went 27-6 overall and 19-1 in league play.
Arkansas State was led by All-Sun Belt Second Team honoree Zyion Shannon, who averaged 11.0 points per game and shot at a 40.4 percent clip this season.
In her third season at the helm of the Red Wolves program, Destinee Rogers coached the team to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, earning a contract extension through 2029.
