Alissa Jones Lifts Troy Past UL Monroe, 1-0
MONROE, Louisiana – The Troy soccer team picked up its first Sun Belt victory of the season on the road Friday afternoon as they defeated ULM, 1-0, thanks to an early goal by Alissa Jones.

Troy (8-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) fired 14 shots in the game, but none more important than the first that found the back of the net. Chelsey Williams found Jones at the top left corner of the box, who placed it to the right of the keeper for the goal in the 3rd minute.

“The team is not very happy with their performance,” Jason Hamilton said. “We did not execute the game plan that we had set in place and we made it tougher than it needed to be. A positive note is that we started the game strong and thankfully got an early lead. We need to improve going forward to be more successful in the conference.”

Mikki Lewis (6-3) had eight saves on the night and earned her fourth shutout this season.

Jones lead all players with six shots, five landing on goal. Williams and Brooke McKee took two shots in the match and three different Trojans took one.

ULM (6-7-1, 0-3 Sun Belt) took 10 shots in the match and landed eight on goal. The Warhawks took nine corner kicks, which is one more than the Trojans.

The Trojans pushed their win streak to eight in a row against the Warhawks.

Troy travels to Lafayette, La., for a match with UL Lafayette on Sunday at 1 p.m.

A-State, Georgia State Battle to a Draw in Double Overtime
JONESBORO, Ark. (10/2/15) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Georgia State Friday afternoon in the Red Wolves Sun Belt Conference home opener at the A-State Soccer Park.

Jordan Adams scored her team leading fourth goal five minutes into the game to give the Red Wolves an early 1-0 lead. The goal was setup on a flip throw by Kassie Flynn who, placed a perfect ball to the head of Adams and then flicked it over the top of Christa Fox’s head and into the net for the goal.

Adams was able to put enough spin and power on the ball, despite having her back to the goal on the shot, while Flynn picked her up sixth assist on the year, second most in the Sun Belt thus far.

A-State (2-9-1, 0-2-1) held the lead until the 81st minute when Georgia State (8-1-3, 2-0-1) was able to break through the Red Wolves’ backline. Caitlin Ray collected a ball from Jenna Moore in the box and was able to dribble into enough open space to put a shot on goal that was just out of the reach of Amanda Lee.

In the overtime periods, Lee and the A-State defense were able to withstand six corner kick chanced from the Panthers to earn the tie. Lee finished with seven saves on the night.

“This performance has been lingering for a few a games now,” A-State soccer coach Brian Dooley said. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was gritty. I was just pleased with how we had we were able to continue to battle through to end the game, even when we gave up the goal, we continued to fight.”

A-State’s goal in the first half marked the eighth time this season that the Red Wolves have scored the first goal of a match. Arkansas State also scored the first goal in its overtime loss to Texas State in its previous outing.

The Red Wolves return to the field Sunday afternoon at Noon against Georgia Southern. It will mark the first time that the Eagles and Red Wolves have squared off in Jonesboro.
