Appalachian State Knocks Off Trojans in Match 1

EMERSON, Ga. - Fourth-seeded Appalachian State defeated fifth-seeded Little Rock in match one of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Ga.

The site of the tournament was switched due to the amount of rainfall that the original location, the GSU Soccer Complex, received on Monday afternoon.

With the win the Mountaineers improve to 10-6-3 on the season and will face the winner of Wednesday's second quarterfinal between top-seeded South Alabama and eighth-seeded UL Lafayette on Friday in the first of two semifinal matches.

The Mountaineers took the early lead in the contest in the 39th-minute on a strike by Jenn Bass. Little Rock got the equalizing goal in the 48th minute from Arola Aparicio Gili. It was her first goal as a Trojan.

App State's Jane Cline broke the 1-1 tie in the game's 78th-minute, which would be the game-winner for the Mountaineers. Cline settled a high, bouncing pass from midfield by Carrie Taylor and beat two Little Rock defenders for a breakaway.

The Trojans had one final chance to force overtime as in the 80th-minute Shannon Shields took a pass and shot it through past App's keeper, Megan Roberson, only Shields was offside and the goal was disallowed.

The Trojans finished the season, one of the best in program history, 8-7-5.

App finished the match with 12 shots, six on goal. LR posted 14 shots and eight on goal.
