Bobcats Extend Winning Streak to Four
SAN MARCOS, Texas – A strong offensive effort by the Texas State soccer team resulted in a 2-0 shutout victory over New Mexico State Friday evening. The Bobcats fired off 34 shots in the contest to improve to 5-2-0 on the year. The victory marked the fourth-straight win for the Bobcats and the fourth shutout of the season.
Two goals in a span of just over three minutes in the second half lifted Texas State to the shutout victory. Sophomore midfielder Rachel Grout put the Bobcats up in the 77th minute on a volleyed shot received from Maddie Nichols. Junior forward Clarissa Leon added to the Bobcat total in the 80th minute on a shot directly scored from Taylor Allen's corner kick.
The Bobcat offense started firing shots early and often, consistently applying pressure to the New Mexico State defense. The first strong opportunity to go up against the Aggies came in the 10th minute on a shot by Landry Lowe. Lowe had an open look just outside the six-yard box, but was denied on a diving save by the New Mexico State goalkeeper.
Texas State continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the first half as it launched 15 first half shots compared to just three by the Aggies.
New Mexico State came out of the gates early in the second half as it applied more pressure to the Bobcat defense. Texas State allowed five shots in the second half, but the combination of three shots off goal and two saves by Bobcat goalkeeper Caitlynn Rinehart kept the Aggies scoreless.
The Bobcats ultimately fired off 19 shots in the second half for a total of 34 in the contest. Texas State finished the match with eight corner kicks compared to four by New Mexico State.
Rinehart ended the match with five total saves as she recorded her fourth shutout of the 2015 season. Grout and Leon each notched their first goals of the year.
The Bobcats were led Friday evening by assistant coaches Link Scoggins and Lauren Frazier as head coach Kat Conner is recovering from surgery. Coach Conner will continue to oversee team operations and recruiting, review game film, and support the coaching staff during her limited role.
Schmidt's Hat Trick Lifts Cajuns in 5-0 Win over Grambling
LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns junior forward Annika Schmidt recorded a career-high three goals, propelling UL to a 5-0 shutout win over visiting Grambling State on Friday night.
The victory extended the Cajuns' (6-2-1) unbeaten streak to six matches and marks the best start in program history.UL's defense held Grambling State to just three shots, all coming in the second half.
Schmidt's first goal came in the fifth minute when she received a pass from Natalie Newman and finished the scoring play from 10 feet away in the goalie box to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead.
Nearly 22 minutes later, Schmidt intercepted a pass and scored on a breakaway from the center of field for her fourth goal of the season.
The Cajuns broke the match open in the 35th minute when Cassandra Reyes found Schmidt from 10 yards out to finish off the hat trick.
Junior Lea Raedle netted her first goal of the campaign at the 48th minute mark, beating Grambling State goalkeeper Damilola Akano on a penalty kick, allowing Louisiana to pull away, 4-0.
Newman added a goal to her statsheet in the 61st minute after scoring when the ball deflected off a Grambling State player.
Schmidt was the first Cajun to record at least three goals in a single match since Yazmin Montoya back on Oct. 18, 2013 vs. Texas State. All five of her scores this season have come in the past two matches.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Stocks improved her record to 2-0-1 after playing 74:34 minutes in goal. Freshman Kristen Eddy finished off the final 15:26 minutes of action.
The Cajuns outshot the Lady Tigers, 26-3, including 15-0 in the first period.
Next up for Louisiana is a matchup with the Houston Cougars in the Lonestar State this Sunday, Sept. 20 for a 4 p.m. first kick.
Georgia State Remains Unbeaten, Defeats Belmont, 2-1
ATLANTA- Georgia State continues its winning ways in Panthersville, recording a 2-1 win over Belmont. The Panthers are now 6-0-2 for the season.
The team maintains their offensive hot streak, controlling the ball for the majority of the game. GSU also continues to outshoot its opponents, with a 14-7 shot advantage over the Bruins.
Suzanne Arafa scored the first goal of the game, putting the Panthers up 1-0 within 25 minutes of the start of the game. She was assisted by Ashley Nagy. This is Arafa’s fifth goal of the season, and the seventh of her career.
Lauren Harriman scored the game winning goal, putting the score 2-0 before Belmont scored their only goal of the game. Harriman was assisted by Margaret Breummer for her second goal of the season.
“I think our players got a little sloppy, but credit goes to Belmont for their intensity in the second half. We need to close our games a little better, but in the end we got the win,” head coach Derek Leader said about the game.
The Panthers stay at home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against Davidson. Parking and admission are free.
Troy Blanks Tennessee Tech, 3-0
COOKEVILLE, Tennessee – Three different Trojans scored in the match as Troy blanked Tennessee Tech, 3-0, at Tech Soccer Field on Friday for its fourth shutout victory of the year.
Troy (6-2) scored late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Defender Payton Donley scored her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute as Natalie Melillo crossed the ball into the middle of the field from the right side and found Donley for the goal.
Just 10 minutes into the second half the Trojans scored their second goal of the match thanks to Chelsey Williams, who scored her fourth goal of the season. Annabell Simpson found Williams just inside the box and she placed the ball just past the right side of the keeper for the score.
Brooke McKee gave the Trojans an insurance goal in the 89th minutes as Haley Roberson passed the ball in to McKee who scored and gave Troy a 3-0 lead.
"This was a good win for the team, we went out and executed our game plan. Playing on the road is always tough," Jason Hamilton said. "Tennessee Tech is a good team defensively only giving up six goals in their previous seven games. We've been asking our team to be more opportunistic all season and we definitely were today."
Sydnay Tucker (1-0) got the start for Troy and made the most of it with four saves and her first career shutout.
The Trojans outshot the Golden Eagles 13-10. Troy landed eight shots on goal and Tennessee Tech landed four on goal. McKee led all players with six shots in the game, three on goal. Williams and Jasmine Fahrnbauer had two shots apiece.
Troy wraps up non-conference play with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., for a match with Belmont on Sunday at 3 p.m.
ULM Tops Southern Miss, 1-0
MONROE, La. – Sophomore Danielle Sabathe headed in a goal in the 14th minute which proved to be the game-winner for the ULM soccer program in a 1-0 decision over Southern Miss on Friday at the ULM Soccer Complex.
The play started after senior Kelley O’Dwyer won the ball for ULM (5-4-1) in the middle of the field. She fed senior Mariah Mitchell down the left wing who crossed it into the center of the penalty box where Sabathe headed it into the lower left corner.
It marked the first goal of the season for Sabathe, a product of Covington, La., and the second of her career. O’Dwyer picked up her 14th career assist to move into second all-time at ULM. It was the eighth career assist for Mitchell as she moved up to No. 8 all-time in school history.
“This was a fantastic team win for the players and our program. We have been feeling really good about how we’ve been playing the last few weeks and we feel we are getting better each week,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza.
For the game, the Warhawks outshot Southern Miss (2-3-3) 15-14 including a 9-6 tally in shots on goal. ULM also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Karlea Fehr registered a team-high three shots with two of them on net. Junior Jenna Pillon, sophomore Danielle LaFrance, junior Mary Ashton Lembo and Mitchell all fired a pair of shots.
Lembo played the full 90 minutes at midfield while freshman Kelsey Dazalla played 90 minutes in back.
In net, freshman Brooke-Lynn Scroggins (2-2) earned the win after getting the start and made a pair of saves. Freshman Julia Idalis Gonzalez came in and played almost 67 minutes and made four saves to preserve the clean sheet. Brittany Taylor (2-3-3) took the loss for the Lady Eagles after saving eight shots.
It was the third shutout of the season for the Warhawks as they previously blanked Mississippi Valley State 3-0 and Grambling State 6-0.
The victory also extended ULM’s unbeaten streak to six games at home including five wins. It marked the first-ever win for the Warhawks over Southern Miss in four tries.
ULM will play its final non-conference game on Sunday when its hosts Southern at 1:00 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex. The Warhawks are 6-0 all-time against the Jaguars.
A-State Falls to Missouri State, 1-0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (9/18/15) — The Arkansas State women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Southeast Missouri State Friday evening at Houck Stadium.
The teams battled through a scoreless opening 45 minutes, but the Redhawks were able to score the game’s only goal just five into to the second half on a shot by Jennifer Antonacci on a thru ball by Paige Blankenheim.
A-State (2-7) threatened several throughout the final 40 minutes of play and looked to have an opportunity to score in the 53rd minute when Katey Carmichael gathered a corner kick from Tayler Carter and turned and fired on goal, but the shot sailed high to keep the Red Wolves off the scoreboard.
Jordan Adams had a look in the 65th minute on a corner from Carter. Adams had her shot blocked, but it bounced to Carter who ran in after taking the corner kick, but her shot was wide of the net.
Cassidy Menke took a shot in the 75th minute, but the shot sailed wide, while the Red Wolves’ final opportunity of the half came on a corner kicker from Carter in the 80th minute, but the ball failed to find its target the Redhawks (4-3-1) were able to clear the danger.
Kelsey Ponder enjoyed a strong game in goal for A-State and made four saves, including three in the second half to keep the deficit at one goal.
Arkansas State returns to the pitch Friday, Sept. 25th for its Sun Belt Conference opener at Appalachian State, followed by a trip to Texas State on Sunday, Sept. 27.
