Panthers Fight to 2OT Draw against Tennessee Tech
ATLANTA- Georgia State remained unbeaten through five matches following a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers now stand 4-0-1 to start the 18-game season.

Tennessee Tech (1-3-2) scored first off a free kick in the first half, in the 21st minute of the match. The Panthers followed that goal by scoring off a corner kick in the 31st minute of the first half. The teams would then battle through a scoreless second half and two overtimes in the 120-minute match.

Senior Jenna Moore scored her first career goal on one of Georgia State’s 13 corner kicks, with the assist coming from Margaret Bruemmer. This was Bruemmer’s first assist of the season.

Host GSU controlled the ball for most of the game, outshooting Tennessee Tech 20-7. The Panthers were able to hold the Golden Eagles without a shot during the overtimes.

GSU keeper Christa Fox had three saves in allowing just one goal in the 120 minutes on the 85-degree Georgia afternoon.

“It was an extremely hard-fought match against a well-organized team. Tennessee Tech presented us with new challenges and the team responded well. We came back from being down a goal and the coaching staff is pleased with the effort we saw today,” head coach Derek Leader said about the game.

The Panthers travel to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama A&M for a Friday, Sept. 11 game at 5 p.m., before returning home for a Sunday afternoon match against Western Kentucky at 1 p.m.

Cade's Late Goal Lifts Cajuns Past Northwestern State
LAFAYETTE -- The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns soccer team broke through with the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute against visiting Northwestern State after sophomore midfielder Ashleigh Cade scored from the right side of the Northwestern State goalie box off a pass from junior Annika Schmidt on Sunday afternoon.

The win was the Cajuns' (4-2-0) third in a row and gave the program its fourth win in the last five matches.

Louisiana had their scoring opportunities in the early going, outshooting the Lady Demons, 4-0 in the first 14 minutes of play. The first half ended with both teams at seven shot attempts apiece.

At the 53-minute mark, Northwestern State's Shelby Drope looked to break the scoreless tie, but was denied by Louisiana freshman goalkeeper Cosette Morche (4-2-0), who recorded six saves on the afternoon.

Schmidt had a pair of looks in the 54th and 58th minute but Northwestern State keeper Alex Lathan, who entered the match for starter Brooke Bourbanais to start the second half, came up with saves. The Cajuns nearly pulled ahead at the 81:29 mark when Schmidt's shot grazed the Northwestern State crossbar, but quickly created another scoring opportunity 25 seconds later to take the 1-0 lead.

"It was a great team effort, not just today but for the entire weekend," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Scot Wieland said. "Considering the heat today, I was really proud of the girls for taking care of business at home. Today we had a great defensive effort, the perfect assist to set up the goal, just a complete team effort. It's always important to protect home field."

The Cajuns are 4-2-0 for the second consecutive season and third time in four years. Louisiana evened the all-time series at 7-7-0 against the Lady Demons and shutout Northwestern State for the second straight meeting.

The Ragin' Cajuns are slated to play in the Baylor University Tournament in Waco, Texas next week. They will face UTSA next Friday, September 11 at 4 p.m. and finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Northern Illinois on Sunday, September 13.

Warhawks Rally Twice to Tie Southeastern Louisiana
MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer program faced two separate deficits in the second half, but came back for the equalizer both times for a 2-2 result after two overtime periods against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at the ULM Soccer Complex.

“This was a tough Sunday game against a very good team. We showed today how resilient we are – we never stopped battling. We had to come from behind twice and had chances to win in regulation,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “We played very hard to earn this result.”

The Warhawks (3-3-1) trailed 1-0 at half when senior Mariah Mitchell drove a ball in from the center of the box in the 58th minute. The play started with junior Mary Ashton Lembo feeding junior Whitney Tuckfield down the right side. Tuckfield perfectly placed a ball at Mitchell’s feet for the setup.

Mitchell scored her team-high third goal of the season and ninth of her career. It was the second assist for both Lembo and Tuckfield on the year.

SLU (4-1-1) came charging back and slotted in the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute. Marisa Rodrigues passed to Sofia Olsson just outside the penalty box and her low shot found the right side of the net.

In the 78th minute, the Warhawks earned a corner kick where Lembo hooked one over the keeper’s head and into the far top corner to knot it up again. It was Lembo’s second goal of the season and third of her career.

Both teams registered 11 shots on goal in the game and ULM held a slight 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Maia Mumford and senior Karlea Fehr recorded five shots apiece.

Lembo was the only Warhawk to play all 110 minutes on the field. She continued her streak of starting every game this season along with Tuckfield, junior Jenna Pillon and freshman Kelsey Dazalla.

“Maia Mumford made her first career start and was our spark plug today. She brings a lot of energy and it rubs off on other players,” said Mazza. “We had five play over 100 minutes.”

In net, freshman Julia Idalis Gonzalez (2-1-1) for ULM and Hope Sabadash (4-1-1) for SLU made nine saves each.

ULM increased its unbeaten streak at home to four games, including three wins. The Lions came into the contest winning all four of its games against unranked teams. Their only blemish was a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Florida State.

“Starting from the keeper to the front line, this weekend has been very positive for our team. I am very proud with how the team has performed under the pressure of being down and getting a result in both games,” said Mazza. “We are really starting to grow and raise our level of play. This team will never stop working.”

SLU’s first goal of the game was also scored by Olsson. She tapped in a cross from the right from Gisenia Utreras.

Up next. The Warhawks will hit the road when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas to play Stephen F. Austin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. ULM will return home next Sunday to play Grambling State at 1:00 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex.

Bobcats Blank Prairie View
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team completed the weekend sweep Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout over Prairie View A&M at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats had two players score their first goals of the season to lift Texas State to victory. Texas State improves to 3-2-0 on the year. Sunday's victory marked the first home victory of the season for Texas State.

The first half of soccer played out slow, as neither team was able to connect with the back of the net. Texas State did, however, outshoot the Lady Panthers, 9-2, in the first with six shots on goal.

Beginning in the 67th minute of the contest, the Bobcats gained an upper hand as Prairie View A&M's Braelah McGinnis was given a red card, ejecting her from the contest.

The Bobcats took advantage as in the 73rd minute, Kassi Hormuth scored an unassisted goal as she flicked it over the Lady Panther goalkeeper. Hormuth earned possession of the ball after Clarissa Leon shot a ball that was blocked by Prairie View A&M. That goal marked Hormuth's first goal of the season and fourth career goal as a Bobcat.

Fourteen minutes later, the Bobcats struck again to solidify their lead over Prairie View A&M. Junior Taylor Allen received a pass from Hormuth out to the right side and scored her first collegiate goal on a ball that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the back left corner of the net.

Texas State finished the contest outshooting the Lady Panthers, 21-5, with nine shots total on goal. Each team recorded three corners and Texas State goalkeeper Caitlynn Rinehart recorded two saves in the shutout.

The Bobcats will now hit the road once again for a pair of contests, first beginning with Northwestern State Friday evening. Kick-off against the Lady Demons is scheduled for 7 p.m.

A-State Blanks MVSU, 4-0
JONESBORO, Ark. (9/6/15) – Senior forward Loren Mitchell became Arkansas State’s career leader in goals and points scored as the Red Wolves cruised to a 4-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State at the A-State Soccer Park Sunday afternoon.

Mitchell’s historic moment came in the 77th minute when she chased down a long pass from Yayedior Mbengue down the right side of the field and out ran the Lady Devilette defense into the penalty area and sent a ball to left side of the goal for the 23 goal of her A-State career. For Mitchell, who had been tied with Shawna Sparks (2002-05), for the career record at A-State, it was her first goal of the season.

The Lawrenceville, Ga., native also became Arkansas State’s career leader in points. In addition to her goal, Mitchell also assisted on a scoring play earlier in the second half to pass Sparks with 54 points in her time at the school. The assist also moved her into fifth place on the career assists list.

Both teams’ battles through a scoreless first half until the Red Wolves (2-4) were able to break through in the 61st minute on a goal by senior captain Jordan Adams on the right side of the net. Mitchell found a streaking Adams in the penalty and delivered a pass in stride as Adams was able to continue her run and send the ball by the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

Arkansas State wasted little time in adding to its lead when Mbengue scored in the 69th minute after having entered the game a substitute just seconds before the goal. The freshman entered the game before a throw in by fellow freshman Kassie Flynn, who delivered a perfect ball to Mbengue in front of the goal and then turned and put past the goalkeeper for the Red Wolves’ second goal of the game.

Katherine Padgett got her first goal of the year on a header in the 71st minute. Padgett was able to head a throw in by Flynn near the goal with a perfectly timed jump over the Mississippi Valley State (1-4) defense for a 3-0 cushion and to setup Mitchell’s record breaking goal six minutes later.

A-State had scoring opportunities throughout the first half and put five shots on goal. It’s best opportunity came in the 37th minute when Adams was awarded a penalty kick, but had the attempt blocked by Rita Grasi to keep the game scoreless at the time.

Kelsey Ponder (1-3) played 74 minutes in goal and got credit for the win, the first of her collegiate career, before giving way to Amanda Lee who finished the game in net. Ponder and Lee combined for the Red Wolves’ second shutout of the season and each made one save.

Arkansas State returns to the field Friday, Sept. 11 to take Idaho at the Mike Rosser Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn. First kick is set for 5 p.m.

Followell's Late Goal Lifts Jags Past Austin Peay
MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama sophomore Chelsea Followwell (Sachse, Texas) volleyed home the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to give the Jaguars a 2-1 win over Austin Peay at the Jaguar Classic Sunday afternoon at The Cage.

The Jags improve to 5-1 on the year while the Lady Govs drop to 1-4.

"We asked for a reaction from Friday, and if I'm honest, a challenging, hard-working defeat is better than a sloppy victory," USA head coach Graham Winkworth said. "I don't think we played to our potential today. The girls worked hard and showed a lot of character at times of the game and when they made it 1-1 we could have gone on and lost the game. So we showed the right character, made a couple of adjustments and scored a nice goal to win the game, but I think our program is better than what we showed today. Hopefully we can actually bounce back and have a strong performance next weekend."

Followwell's goal, her second of the season, came at the 81:26 mark. Senior Alyssa Mayer (Birmingham, Ala.) dribbled down the right side and sent a cross directly to the foot of Followwell, who hit it first time past the Austin Peay goalkeeper.

"We had just put Alyssa on and told her to get forward," Winkworth said. "She managed to get to the end line, which is one of the things we talked about in the pregame, put in a lovely cross and Chelsea got on the back post. We wanted numbers in the box and Chelsea managed to get on the end of it. It was a volley, but it was almost a tap-in because of the work Alyssa put in down the right side."

The Lady Govs seriously threatened with four minutes left when Jennifer Smith got behind the Jaguar to defense but her pair of shots were kept out of the net.

Followwell's attempt was just the third of the half for the Jaguars, who were outshot 5-3 after halftime after holding a 13-2 margin in the first half. USA didn't register a single shot in the second half until the 72:46 mark, a narrow miss from senior Alli Cochrane (Chelsea, Ala.).

"We didn't create quality chances," Winkworth said. "Our movement off the ball in the heat wasn't particularly strong, and we have to work on that this week. Hopefully we'll fix that by the time we play in Louisiana."

South Alabama needed Followwell's goal after Austin Peay tied the game at 1-1 just under eight minutes after halftime. Gina Fabbro caught up to a long Shelby Olszewski pass down the right wing and lofted a shot from near the byline over the USA goalkeepers' outstretched arm.

South Alabama sophomore Ashlynn Jones (Pickerington, Ohio) got the Jags on the board in the 22nd minute with her second scoring tally of the season. Jones was hit with a pass from sophomore Steffi Hardy in space between defenders and drilled it home.

"It's always nice to get an early goal and it took some pressure off," Winkworth stated. "It was a good goal and it's nice to score. I was hoping that we would go on from there but I think the girls relaxed just a little bit after we scored and didn't give our opponent the respect that they deserve. We took our foot off the pedal and we can't do that; we need to make sure that if we score, we go ahead and try and put the game away early, because it would have given us more time to relax."

Jones almost put USA ahead 13 minutes earlier after she broke free and rounded the keeper, but her shot was kept out by an APSU defender, as was freshman Jemma Purfield's (Cottingham, England) rebound attempt.

Sophomore Courtney Baum (Cumming, Ga.) made one save in net for the Jags, while her counterpart, Lindsey Todd, made eight stops.

The Jaguars head back out on the road for a pair of contests next weekend, starting with Southeastern Louisiana Friday at 3 p.m.

Mountaineers Fall to George Mason, 1-0
FAIRFAX, Va. — Appalachian State University women's soccer took the pitch against head coach Sarah Strickland's alma mater, George Mason, on Sunday for the final match of the Patriot Invitational. The Mountaineers (3-2-0) fell to the Patriots (3-2-0), 1-0, at George Mason Stadium.

"I am very proud of the effort we showed today. We battled a tough and disciplined George Mason team," said Strickland. "We created chances in the second half and had opportunities to put the ball away."

The Apps battled through a scoreless first half. All three of the Mountaineers first-half shots required saves from the Patriot goalkeeper. George Mason tallied four shots but none were on target.

It stayed a 0-0 game until the 83rd minute. George Mason's Nicolette Herdegen crossed a ball in the box that Sarah Hardison headed past Mountaineer goalkeeper, Sam Steyl, for the games only goal.

The Mountaineers had five shots on goal compared to the Patriots three but were unable to level the score before the final whistle blew.

Strickland continued, " We were able to get a lot of girls time on the field this weekend which is great for the long term development of our program. I'm genuinely excited about this group and our potential."

Three Mountaineers were selected to the Patriot Invitational all-tournament team. Defenders Lindsey Tully and Aubrey Fletcher joined forward Jane Cline on the all-tournament team.

The Mountaineers are back in action at home next Friday, Sept. 11 against High Point. Kick off is set for 5:00 p.m. from Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

Troy Falls to South Florida on Final Day of Jaguar Classic
MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy soccer team had chances to score, but South Florida scored late to defeat the Trojans, 1-0, on Sunday, the final day of the Jaguar Classic.

Olivia Chance scored the game-winning goal for South Florida (5-0) in the 84th minute.

"This was a very difficult team to play against, they could easily be a top 25 team," Jason Hamilton said. "We battled and matched them athletically and physically and it just came down to execution. We had some very good looks at goal, but we just weren't composed enough to put the ball in the back of the net. That's the difference in winning and losing the game."

Troy (5-2) led the Bulls in shots and shots on goal. The Trojans fired 12 shots with seven landing on goal. South Florida finished the match with 11 shots and five being on target.

Alissa Jones led all players with five shots, four on goal. Jasmine Fahrnbauer and Chelsey Williams had two shots each and three other Trojans fired one shot.

Troy's biggest chance came in the 30th minute when Williams took a penalty kick that was saved by the Bulls goalkeeper. Williams fired a shot immediately after that missed high.

The Trojans will resume play on Friday, September 18 as they take on Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn.

Small Snags 13 Saves in 1-0 overtime Loss at Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. – Junior goalkeeper Sara Small had the game of her life, making a career-high 13 saves and flummoxing a Southeastern Conference team for more than 90 full minutes.

But in the sixth minute of overtime, Ole Miss finally converted on one of its many opportunities to earn a 1-0 victory over Little Rock on Sunday evening.

The Trojans (3-3) defended for nearly the entire game against the Rebels (4-0-2), and Small proved to be the star defender. She had eight saves in the first half and five more in the second to help send the game to overtime in front of a large, pro-Rebels crowd.

CeCe Kizer would eventually have the game-winner for the Rebels in the 96th minute, striking the ball from the right side of the penalty box into the upper left corner of the net.

"This was a loss that really felt like a win, if that's possible," coach Adrian Blewitt said. "We got the maximum out of the girls who played in every department. We knew we had to defend, we got organized defensively and they battled their hearts out."

But Small was far from alone in the defensive half of the field throughout the contest. Trojan defenders Nora Hellmers, Hali Long, Bailey Fithian all played the full 96 minutes and cleared countless balls away from danger for the game's duration. Midfielder Mikayla Uyokpeyi also played the full 96 minutes and was vital defending as well.

Claire Palmer, Caitlin Eddy, Talia Graves, Quin Wilkes and Jaclyn Purvine all also played more than an hour of the game, helping to knock Ole Miss chances away from danger throughout.

In the end, the Rebels took 30 total shots on goal to the Trojans' four and had 13 corner kicks to Little Rock's one.

"We had a fantastic keeper display tonight from Sara Small," Blewitt said. "We take great confidence from this, and I think we progressed as a team tonight."

The first half of the contest completely belonged to Small. By the time 45 minutes had come off the clock, Small had already registered a career-high eight saves. The Rebels had multiple tremendous opportunities on goal, but Small went horizontal throughout the half to knock away any Ole Miss shot she had to.

The first save of the evening, though, went to Hali Long. The Little Rock defender ran back toward the net to keep a shot by Gretchen Harknett from going in as Small had come out of the net to challenge the attack. Long's save kept the scoreboard blank in the second minute and set the stage for Small's big afternoon.

Small's best moment may have come in the 40th minute of the game. With the Rebels breaking in on goal, a Trojan defender committed a foul in the penalty box to set up a penalty kick. But Small was equal to the task, diving low to parry yet another chance by the home team.

At the first-half break, Ole Miss had taken 17 shots and eight corner kicks while the Trojans had zeros in both of those categories. The Trojans' offense was limited in the period, though Garuba, Quin Wilkes, Uyokpeyi, Purvine and Eddy teamed up for some quality passing at points. None of it resulted in any clear chances on goal, however.

Little Rock began the second half in a more assertive fashion, taking a shot and earning a corner kick in the first three minutes. The Trojan defense again remained incredibly strong, allowing the Rebels to take just seven shots in the second half and cutting down on their first-half total by 10.

Small still had plenty of work to do in the period, making five saves and snagging corner kicks, crosses and long throw-ins out of midair to help the Trojans force overtime.

Through the first five minutes of overtime, the story remained the same as the Trojans kept the Rebels from threatening very seriously. But as the clock reached the 95:00 mark, Ole Miss' Addie Forbus hit a shot off the crossbar and a rebound by Kizer was blocked by the Trojan defense.

Twenty seconds after that, the game was over on Kizer's strike.

Next up for the Trojans is a home game on Tuesday night. Little Rock welcomes in-state rival UAPB to the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex for another #CrowdColeman game at 7 p.m.
