FOLEY, Ala. - The South Alabama Jaguars clinched their fourth consecutive Sun Belt Women's Soccer championship crown on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
The Jaguars become just the second team in league history to win four consecutive tournament titles. This year's tournament run was the most dominant of the four as the Jaguars did not allow a single goal in three matches, outscoring the opposition, 9-0.
The Jaguars (15-5-1) are also the first champion to shutout all three opponents since 2012. The shutout gave Jaguar keeper Justice Stanford her league-leading tenth of the season and the Jags their 12th this year.
USA's Jemma Purfield, the 2016 Sun Belt Player of the Year, picked up another award following the championship as she was named the 2016 Women's Soccer Championship Most Outstanding Player, after a three-shot, two-goal performance.
Purfield was named to the All-Tournament team which also honored Jaguar teammates, Chardé Hannah, Ashlynn Jones, Jana Loeber and Stanford.
Purfield scored both of USA's goals as she finished the tournament with three total goals. Her first goal of the championship match came in the 57th-minute as she took a pass from Loeber and scored off the left wing getting past Coastal Carolina's keeper, Becca Austin.
She added her second goal in the matches 85th-minute scoring off a corner kick for her 11th-goal of the season.
With the win the Jaguars will now wait for the NCAA selection show, which airs on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. CT, to see whom USA will face in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament.
The Chanticleers saw their run in their first season as members of the Sun Belt come to an end with a 12-6-3 record.
Four members of the Chants earned All-Tournament honors as Amber Adams, Kayla Christian, Sam Patterson and Ellie Taylor were named to the team following the championship.
