LATE HENLEY STRIKE RESCUES SOCCER AGAINST AUSTIN PEAY
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A goal from junior Danielle Henley (Hattiesburg, Miss.) with just over three minutes left in the game was the difference as the University of South Alabama soccer team edged Austin Peay 1-0 Friday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
The Jaguars win their second straight and improve to 4-2-1 on the year while the Governors drop their third in a row to fall to 3-3.
"First of all, a lot of credit should go to Austin Peay," USA head coach Graham Winkworth said. "They were an extremely hard-working team. Obviously I'm happy to get the result, but we need to work on being more creative as a team and have to work a little harder. I always felt like it was going to be a challenge coming away from home to the OVC when you've just had a great win on Monday night.
"Despite our performance not being at the level it needs to be for the remainder of the season, I'm happy to get a result and we can move forward from there."
Henley's goal came with 3:07 left in the contest. Sophomore Jemma Purfield (Cottingham, England) put a ball into the penalty area from the left wing and Henley headed it over the keeper and tapped it into the open net.
"It was brave of Danielle to get on the end of that," Winkworth noted. "She got that first touch and calmly slotted it in; it was a good finish. It was a nice knock over the top from Jemma."
South Alabama outshot Austin Peay 14-9, but held only a 5-3 margin in shots on net. Henley, and juniors Ashlynn Jones (Pickerington, Ohio) and Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) had three shots each, and combined for four of the five shots that hit the target.
Hannah tested APSU goalkeeper Mary Parker Powell on each side of halftime to account for two of the team's shots on goal.
"I thought in the final third we didn't work hard enough, both offensively and defensively, particularly in the midfield going forward," Winkworth said. "Fortunately our backline held strong and limited the number of easy opportunities for them and we managed to get a result. We've got to show an increased level of professionalism, and whoever is put in front of the team, we need to play at South Alabama's level and raise our game for everybody. That is something we will focus on for the remainder of the season because we've got a lot of tough games as the season continues."
Freshman Justice Stanford (The Colony, Texas) got the nod in goal and picked up her second shutout in a row. She made three saves – two in the second half – with the final one coming in the final moments to preserve the win.
"I think she was solid," said Winkworth. "She didn't have too much to do, but she was solid. I heard her communicating back there and she had safe hands. She'll continue to work on her distribution, but I thought all in all, she had a solid enough game, even though she wasn't tested as much as she was on Monday night."
The Jaguars will go for their third straight win Sunday against Ole Miss at 6 p.m.
"Good teams are able to get a result when they're not playing to their potential, and that is something that happened to us tonight," Winkworth stated. "We are a good team and we have a lot of talented players, so it's important as a coach that we regroup tomorrow, dust this one off, and prepare for the next one because obviously we have another difficult game 46 hours from now."
Cline Pushes Apps Past GWU in Overtime Thriller
BOONE, N.C. — Senior Jane Cline scored two goals in the come-from-behind victory at Gardner-Webb on Friday evening, getting the game-winner in the second overtime period off the Jenn Bass assist.
"Despite some serious adversity, we found a way to get the result against a very organized, well-coached Gardner-Webb team," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "I am very proud of this group for the composure they showed and the heart demonstrated by all players, whether they were on the field or on the sideline. I'm very proud of Jenn Bass and Jane Cline for their perseverance up top and for Sarah Moon for her inspiration coming in off the bench."
The Mountaineers (5-2) raced out of the gates in the match, outshooting the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-4-2) 13-5 but weren’t able to get one in, despite getting four of them on frame.
After a scoreless first half, App State found themselves down 1-0 again, falling on a header in the 66th minute by Bailey Hierholzer who worked off a ball placed behind the line.
Appalachian continued the aggressive gameplan and finally found a way to break the seal on the net in the 70th minute when Cline placed a nice high ball over the keeper from seven yards out for the equalizer.
The intensity only escalated as both teams wanted to get the game-winner. But both defenses clamped down in the final 20 minutes to force an overtime.
In the first 10-minute overtime, the App State held a possession advantage but wasn’t able to find a goal.
Finally in the final overtime period, senior Bass once again this season found her senior partner for the game-winner as she lifted the ball from the right side of the goal into the back of the net.
Cline’s two goals gives her six on the season and bumps her up to tied-fifth (Julia Holz - 2011-14) on the all-time career goals list with 22.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Ray earned her second win of the season, improving to 2-0. She finished the day with two saves and one goal allowed in just over 105 minutes of action.
Troy Soccer Defense Solid, Ties Mercer
MACON, Georgia – The Troy soccer team did not allow a shot on goal, but failed to score as the Trojans and Mercer tied, 0-0, in double overtime.
Brooke McKee led the team with six shots while Abby Reynolds added four. As a team, the Trojans attempted 15 shots and 15 corners.
STAT OF THE GAME
Goalkeeper Mikki Lewis did not face a shot the entire game, which is testament to the solid work by the Troy defense. Mercer finished with six shots, none on goal.
QUOTABLE
"That was a tough game to not come away with a win," head coach Jason Hamilton said.
"15 shots and 15 corners show we created a lot, but we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. We scored on the first corner of the game, but it was called back and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves in the first 10 minutes of the game. Defensively, we were very pleased not giving up a shot on goal. We are going to need that momentum going into Sunday's game against Florida State.
