CONWAY – Hannah Miller and Lauren Dabner each scored to lead the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Arkansas State in the final match of the regular season for both teams in Conway at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The win improved the Chanticleers record to 8-7-1 overall and 7-3 in Sun Belt action while the Red Wolves fell to 8-7-2 and 5-5 in conference play.
The first 45 minutes saw both teams trading possessions and neither getting a solid look on frame. Coastal held a slight 7-4 advantage in shots with the visiting goalkeeper having a 2-1 advantage in saves.
A touch over five minutes elapsed off the game clock in the second half before Arkansas State took a 1-0 lead. Hailey Furio gathered up a failed Chanticleer clear attempt off a corner and beat the diving CCU goalkeeper in the 51st minute.
Miller found the equalizing goal by firing a shot about 10 yards outside the box to the upper right of the goal off the pass from Elisabeth Rockhill in the 65th minute to even it up at 1-1. It was Miller's fourth goal on the year.
The Chants applied defensive pressure squeezing the offense to turn the tide in their favor, yet couldn't find the goal ahead goal over the rest of the second half to send the game to overtime tied at 1-1.
After a brief intermission, the first of two potential overtimes started with the captains at midfield for the coin toss. Coastal started out firing the ball down the field looking for the quick strike. Abby Gashel took possession in front of the Chanticleer bench and fired into the box where a streaking Dabner was able to get a touch on it with her thigh to push it by the diving Arkansas State goalkeeper for the golden goal with 1:40 elapsing off the clock in the first overtime period.
CCU outshot the visiting Red Wolves 20-11 for the match, but trailed in corner kick attempts 7-4.
Coastal Carolina will return to action as they will travel to Foley, Ala. on Oct. 31 for the quarterfinal round of the Sun Belt Championship. The opponent and time is yet to be determined.
