Coastal Carolina 57, South Carolina State 44
Conway, S.C. – Junior center Naheria Hamilton scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds as Coastal Carolina pulled away in the final minutes for a 57-44 win over South Carolina State at the HTC Center.
Hamilton was supported by junior guard Torrie Cash, who had 10 points, as the Chanticleers moved to 2-0 on the season. South Carolina State, which fell to 0-3, was paced by senior guard Rhein Beamon's 15 points.
South Alabama 77, Southern Miss 68
MOBILE, Ala. – Savannah Jones scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter on Wednesday, helping the University of South Alabama women's basketball team finish with 28 in the period on the way to a 77-68 come-from-behind, non-conference victory over Southern Mississippi at the Mitchell Center.
The sophomore guard hit 4-of-5 shots from the floor over the final 10 minutes including all three of her shots from beyond the three-point arc as the Jaguars improved to 2-0 on the season. Her three with three-and-a-half minutes to go put South up 66-65, and when she hit another with just under a minute left it extended the Jag advantage to six points.
Little Rock 61, Florida Atlantic 38
LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0) grounded the FAU Owls (0-3, 0-0) 61-38 Wednesday night in the Trojans' home opener Wednesday night. Ronjanae DeGray led all scorers with 17 points and was helped out with 14 points from Yanina Inkina.
The Trojans got off to a slow start, not hitting its first bucket until 7:23 of the first quarter, but found a quick rhythm, jumping out to a 10-2 lead halfway through the first quarter. The teams would jockey back and forth for the rest of the frame, the Owls clawing within five points numerous times, but Little Rock would distance themselves in the second quarter and go up 17 at the half.
Dillard 72, Louisiana 69
LAFAYETTE – Another double-double from sophomore Ty'Reona Doucet and sophomore Jomyra Mathis' first-career double-double, were not enough for Louisiana Women's Basketball (1-2, 0-0 SBC) as the Ragin' Cajuns fell to the Dillard Bleu Devils (3-0, 0-0 GCAC), 72-69, in the Fifth Annual Education Game at the CAJUNDOME, on Wednesday.
Docuet finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Mathis added a career-high 13 points and 11 rebounds, as Louisiana outrebounded Dillard 37-to-31. Louisiana held an 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but a 14-0 run from Dillard brought the Bleu Devils back, and Louisiana could not overcome the late run, dropping its second game of the season.
Arkansas 66, UTA 65
ARLINGTON – A heart-breaking jumper to beat the buzzer saw Arkansas top UT Arlington 66-65 on Wednesday night at College Park Center.
The Lady Mavericks (1-1) had a chance at the free-throw line to go up by three, but after both rimmed out, the Razorbacks (2-0) advanced the ball out of a time out, and saw Alexis Tolefree get a friendly bounce on a mid-range jumper as time expired. The dagger spoiled the hard-fought efforts of the Lady Mavs that included a career-high 21 points from Lauren Billie, a spectacular effort by Cierra Johnson with 22 points, and a remarkable stat line by freshman Katie Ferrell of 10 boards, seven points, four steals, four blocks and six assists. Ferrell has dished 13 assists in two games as a Lady Maverick.
