App State Blanks South Carolina State, 3-0, in Home Victory
BOONE, N.C. - Lightning ended Friday evening's contest early, but not before Appalachian State University women's soccer (2-2-1) used three first-half goals to roll past South Carolina State , 3-0, at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

The Mountaineers are 2-0 at home this season while they have outscored both of their opponents 6-0 at Ted Mack. App is in the midst of a six-match homestand.

"One of our team goals is to have 50 percent of our shots be shots on goal and to get high-percentage shots," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "I thought we created a lot of opportunities and I thought our services were great. The whole idea was to get numbers in the box, to finish and then also get a lot of girls significant minutes tonight."

Lightning entered the area late in the second half, which led to the game being called with just under 14 minutes left in the contest.

App State was on the attack all evening with a season-high 11 SOG on a season-best 21 shots for a .528 shot on goal percentage. Appalachian also posted a 4-2 advantage in corners.

Molly Niewald and Mary Perkins each scored their first-career goals, while Niewald scored twice in a span of eight minutes. Kristin Brown and Audrey Emerson earned their first assist of the season.

Taylor Ray notched the second clean sheet of her career and the first of the season. The senior goalkeeper played all 90 minutes en route to the victory, while the Black and Gold's stout defense allowed South Carolina State to attempt just two shots outside of the box.

The Mountaineers didn't waste any time in getting on the board, as Brown found Niewald with a cross before firing it in with a clear attempt, giving the freshman her first-collegiate goal.

Niewald wasn't done there, as just eight minutes later she drew a penalty in the box. The West End, N.C., native capitalized on the opportunity and gave App a 2-0 lead following her shot that went into the right corner of the net for the second goal of the game.

With the App holding a comfortable lead at the 32-minute mark, Emerson found her fellow Mountaineer in Perkins with a perfect lead that led to the sophomore's first-career score after firing in her goal in the left corner.

App took its 3-0 advantage in the second half and was never threatened the rest of the way, improving the Black and Gold's mark to 9-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Six different Mountaineers recorded multiple shots while seven student-athletes had an attempt that was on target.

Appalachian will look to stay perfect at home on Sunday at 5 p.m. against a Gardner-Webb team that drew to a 1-1 tie against Navy on Friday evening.

DAVIS' GAME-WINNER LIFTS GEORGIA STATE PAST CHATTANOOGA IN 2OT
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Georgia State women’s soccer earned its first road win of the season after Hannah Davis scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute of Friday’s 2-1 double overtime victory over Chattanooga. It was GSU’s third consecutive match to reach double overtime, a stretch where the Panthers are undefeated.

The win propelled Georgia State to 2-2-1 overall while Chattanooga fell to 3-2-0 on the year. The Panthers improved to a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Mocs.

Chattanooga took control early with a goal in the sixth minute of Friday’s match. Neither team was able to get much going for the remainder of the half, as both the Panthers and Mocs had just three shots apiece after 45 minutes of play.

The GSU offense came alive in the second half and led to Brooke Shank heading in the equalizer in the 60th minute off an assist from Ava Jouvenel. The goal was Shank’s third of the season, already tripling her total from last year.

Georgia State continued to keep the pressure on the Mocs late in the second half but were unable to net the winning goal before the end of regulation. Both teams attempted two shots in the first overtime period but remained tied. Then in the fifth minute of the second overtime period, Caitlin Ray tapped a pass to Davis who buried it in the back of the net to give her team their second win of the season.

GSU ended the night with 14 total shots and five on goal while Chattanooga had 11 total shots and seven on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Lydia Fraga had six saves and earned her first win of the season.

The Panthers are back in action 6 p.m. Sunday for a match against UAB at the GSU Soccer Complex. Sunday’s matchup will be the third meeting between the Panthers and the Blazers, with UAB owning a 2-0 all-time series advantage. The Blazers won the most recent outing 1-0 in 2017.

ULM Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to McNeese
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The ULM soccer team was less than three minutes from its first win of the season on Friday (Aug. 31), leading 1-0 going into the final minutes of regulation and eventually falling 2-1 to the McNeese Cowgirls.

The Warhawks took the lead for the first time this season, after freshman Maelwenn Gaiffas scored her first collegiate goal in the maroon in gold with 27:34 on the clock.

Gaiffas' shot on goal was only one of three for ULM, with Taylor Altieri and Mackenzie Bell taking the other attempts at McNeese' goalkeeping unit.

The Cowgirls did not let up on freshman goalkeeper Bre Truscott all night, firing off 36 shots with 17 on the mark. Truscott walked away with a Sun Belt-high 15 saves against McNeese.

Despite the high shot count, ULM's defense kept McNeese' shot on goal percentage to the lowest its been through its previous four games, a mere .472 percent.

"We were able to keep their chances to the outside of the pitch," Wheelock said. "It limited their ability to make an adequate shot but we have to be more disciplined on set pieces, that's where our opponents are causing the most trouble for us."

With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, McNeese' Keely Morrow received a cross ball from teammate Rebecca Adcock that was sent in passed Truscott for the equalizer. Neither team would be able to score again, forcing the game into overtime.

With only 34 seconds left in the first overtime period, McNeese managed a pass from the outside in to mid-field, where Rachel Palet sent it soaring into the top left corner of the goal, out of reach of Truscott.

The Warhawks are still on the hunt for win number one, and take that challenge to Natchitoches, La. on Sunday (Sept. 2 ) when they face the Lady Demons of Northwestern State at 1 p.m.

Little Rock Earns Impressive Win on Senior Day
LITTLE ROCK- On Senior Day, Jaclyn Purvine continued her impressive goal-scoring streak as the Trojans picked up their third consecutive victory against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay on Friday night. An own goal as well as freshman Astros Luckas's first goal in a Little Rock uniform helped the Trojans grab 3-1 win at home.

"I thought we struggled at the start," said Head Coach Mark Foster. "I think the emotions of senior day probably got the better of us. That is natural on senior day. But once we got into a rhythm and matched their work rate, our quality showed."

The Trojans were beneficiaries of a fortunate bounce for their first goal of the match in the sixth minute when Sairra Tucker delivered a dangerous cross into the box. The ball took a deflection off an Austin Peay defender and found its way into the back of the net to give Little Rock a 1-0 advantage.

The lead was doubled in the 27th minute when Purvine continued her magnificent goal-scoring form by beating the defenders to a loose ball in the box and knocking it home to make the score 2-0. This was her fourth goal in the last three games.

Purvine was not done on the offensive end, however, as she headed a ball to the feet of Luckas who wasted no time to take a useful touch that would set her up for the shot and the goal.

The Governors were frantically trying to get back in the game in the dying minutes, and managed to score on a Katie Kenward header that found its way over the head of Sara Johannsdottir and into the back of the net. The effort would prove to be too little too late for Austin Peay as the Trojans would hang on for a 3-1 result.

Little Rock proved to be extremely effective in the attacking third of the pitch against an Austin Peay side that had not conceded a goal before Friday night.

All 10 seniors made a start for the Trojans as they were all honored prior to kickoff for their dedication and commitment to the Little Rock soccer program.

"I didn't recruit this senior class, but if I did, I couldn't have picked a better class myself," said Foster. "I'm so blessed and thankful for the previous coaching staff for leaving such a foundation in place with these great seniors. I'm just thankful for the seniors for being open to me, the new staff and new ideas and just embracing it. I just told the seniors that this thing can go a long way if they want it to. And I think they're up for it."

Little Rock will return to action when they travel to Itta Bena, Miss. to take on Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, Sept. 2 for another nonconference matchup.

Furio's Header Sends A-State to Overtime Win
JONESBORO, Ark. (8/31/18) – Hailey Furio’s header with 33 seconds to go in the first overtime period gave Arkansas State a 2-1 victory over Tulsa Friday evening at Hurricane Stadium.

Playing in overtime for the third straight match, the Red Wolves (2-0-2) capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the waning seconds of the first overtime period when Maggie Ertl headed in a cross from Lindsey Brochu that ricocheted off the crossbar and back to the head of Furio who immediately pushed the ball into the net from one-yard out for the game winning-goal.

“I was proud of the intensity we kept throughout the game,” A-State head coach Brian Dooley said. “We settled in the second half with some of our passing and continued to find our space to work in. We had some good chances that just didn’t go our way in the first half, but we didn’t get down on ourselves and kept working to get ourselves back in it. After Sarah’s goal we had some new life and then when the overtime period it was like a brand new game for us and we were able to be in the right spot at the right time.”

Arkansas State trailed in the match until the 67th minute when Sarah Sodoma connected on her first goal of the season. The sophomore took a pass from Maggie Ertl five-yards out from the net and put away the attempt to tie the game at 1-1.

The Red Wolves continued to stay aggressive on the offensive end and nearly one the game in the final seconds of regulation when Taylor Schneider took a shot off a corner kick from Riley Ebenroth that was saved by Tulsa’s Mica MacKay.

Tulsa took an early lead in the match with Fabi Miguel scored on a kick from 18-yards out that Megan McClure was unable to get to. McClure made eight saves, one off her career-high, and helped direct the defense throughout the second half as the Red Wolves fought to get the game-tying goal.

With the victory the Red Wolves have now not lost in their last six matches dating back to the end of the 2017 season. This also marks just the second time in program history and the first time since 2010 that Arkansas State has not lost through its first four matches of the season.

A-State will look to continue its undefeated streak on Sunday when it takes on Oral Roberts. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Bobcats Fall to Islanders in Hard Fought Match
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas State soccer team battled with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and held a 16-9 advantage in shots but were unable to find the back of the net as the Islanders took the match 1-0 at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium Friday night.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 1-4-0 on the season while the Islanders are now 1-2-0 overall.

Kaylee Davis had the first opportunity for TXST in the match halfway through the eighth minute. Haley Groff sent in a cross from the right side that Davis was able to get a foot on but the ball trickled just wide of the right post.

Davis had another opportunity late in the 16th minute when she was able to use her speed to create enough separation from a defender to get a shot off. Her attempt unfortunately flew into the outside of the left netting.

In the 23rd minute, Davis drove towards the middle of the 18-yard box. The Allen, Texas native laid off the ball to Renny Moore, who sent a shot towards the right post but the keeper made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.

TAMUCC struck for the only goal of the match late in the 54th minute when Kaitlyn Joy sent in a cross that curled into the top of the net just inside the right post thanks to the swirling wind at the field.

Both Jordan Kondikoff (63rd) and Mackenzie Smith (62nd) took hard shots a minute apart from tough angles on the right side of the 18-yard box. However, both were right at the keeper and she smothered both of them to prevent a rebound.

Following a TXST corner kick, the Islander had a counter attack with Dana Curtis going one-on-one with Jamie Brown. The senior forced the attacker just wide enough that her shot hit off the left post and out of bounds for a goal kick.

The Bobcats were able to take two more shots off in the match over the final 19 minutes. Kondikoff sent in a shot that went wide left of the net in the middle of the 75th minute. Haley Groff took a rip off a corner kick late in the 88th minute that was blocked by a defender.

Davis led all players with four shots but was unable to put any on frame. Kondikoff had three attempts on the night and Kelly Barbalias took two shots.

Kathryn Budde played the entire match between the posts. The junior made four saves for the second straight contest to match her season-high.

The weekend concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a match at Prairie View A&M.
